Summary

When Sadie Alexander’s employer dies, she knows she’ll need to leave the household. Mrs. Ludlow’s son has already made improper advances, and now it would be hard to avoid him. Desperate, she sees an ad in a newspaper for a bride, so she mails a hastily written letter and travels to California on a wagon train. Being an orphan, she has no family to turn to. If the offer isn’t still open or the man looks unsuitable, she’ll try to find a job there. However, when she arrives, Mr. Laird is away with his construction business, and his older friend has been left to meet her.

Sawyer Laird couldn’t believe that he finally got a response from his advertisement for a bride after all this time, and it couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. He still has construction contracts he needs to fulfill in Placerville, a gold-mining town that is no place for a lady. Well, she would just have to wait a while. He sure hoped she’d be the understanding sort.

Getting off to a rocky start at their first meeting, they both begin to see the other’s point of view, agree to call a truce, and decide to start over. However, Sadie is still leery of this man who puts his business above his potential wife. She’s not sure she wants to live that kind of life.

Great narration of a sweet story

This book was a lovely backdrop as I did some manual jobs on a Saturday afternoon.

Sawyer was a great male lead. I struggled with the heroine Sadie's behaviour that was at times petulant. Thankfully she saw the error of her ways before I got too irritated. I enjoyed being transported to California in the 1800s and experiencing the many perils and adventures there.

The narration was excellent.

Wonderful, heartfelt story!

Mail order brides always make me feel good. There is something about the idea of marrying unseen that is romantic. But for Sadie, this may not be the case. After her employer dies and she is being harassed by her new one, she takes off to California. She had seen an ad by chance, and knew it was a sign. Arriving to find her intended isn't there, she settles in with his house with the help of his friend and waits. Sawyer never expected anyone to respond to his ad. It had been a year, things had changed and his life no longer included a wife. Or did it? These two were so much fun! I loved their interactions, the letter writing and the feel of a budding relationship. It's so much fun to hear a good story with faith and love. This is the perfect holiday listen.

Alexandra Bitton-Bailey brings it all to life with a wonderful narration. Each character alive and real, she creates a small town, a new family feel and the trials of those times all with her voices. I enjoyed her performance and would definitely look for more.
