＜あらすじ＞
頼子は空襲の度に非常な恐怖を感じていた。何の仕事をしてもその恐怖が去らず、慣れてましになるどころか、敵機が来るたびに恐怖が強くなるばかりであった。
ただこの恐怖から逃れたい、そのためならどんなことでもしよう――
妹の「工場のなかにいるときはそれほどでもなかった」という言葉を思い出した頼子は、 人手不足になっている軍需工場の機翼の塗工部で働くことにした。しかし、働いている中でも少数機による夜間の空襲は続き、頼子の感ずる恐怖の激しさは少しも変わらなかった。
そして、十日ほどたったとき、昼間空襲にぶつかった。主任の「総員退避」の声に従い、防空壕へ避難する頼子だったが、行き交う爆音の中でその恐怖は頂点にまで達した。 無意識に立ち上がった頼子は、壕を出て、塗工部の建物へ走りこんだ。そして、刷毛を手に自分の担当している機を塗り始める。その瞬間、頼子はふしぎなちからが身内に湧き上がるのを感ずるのだった……
