 ある時渡辺は、普請最中のホテルにて昔付き合っていた欧州の女性と再会を果たした 。

ある雨上がりの夕刻、参事官の渡辺は、築地の西洋料理店に出かける。店内はまだ普請中で、応接室にまで響きが耳につくが、五時になると職人が帰ってしまって静かである。やがて独逸人の若い女性がやってくる。渡辺がドイツにいた時の愛人で、ロシアのウラジオストクから渡辺に会いに来た。
当時の時代を象徴した二人の関係や、日露戦争後、近代国家の体裁を整えながらもまだ完成に至っていない日本の状態を見事に表現している傑作。
森鴎外
1862年（文久2年）島根県に生まれる。森家は津和野藩の典医を務めた。10歳の時、父と上京し、官立医学校に入るためにドイツ語を学ぶ。1873年、東京大学医学部に12歳で入学。卒業後は陸軍軍医副になり、東京陸軍病院に勤務し、ドイツの衛生制度を調べるためにドイツに留学。1889年「小説論」、翻訳戯曲を発表するなど軍医でありながら文筆活動をしていた。「陸軍省医務局長まで務めたが、1916年に退官。その後、東京国立博物館に就任。1922年に60歳で死去。©2022 PanRolling Asian Genre Fiction Literary Fiction World Literature
