貧しい農家に生まれた丈吉は、18歳で出島の仲買人に雇われ、ボーイ、洗濯係、コック見習いになる。

そして21歳のときにオランダ総領事の専属料理人になり、3年後に結婚。夫婦で日本初の西洋料理店をオープンさせた。店には、陸奥宗光、五代友厚、後藤象二郎、岩崎弥太郎といった綺羅星のごとき男たちがやって来る。

明治の世になり、大阪へ移った丈吉は、重要な式典で饗応料理を提供するまでになるのだが……。

夫婦で困難を乗り越え、夢をつかみ取る姿を活き活きと描いた傑作長編。
