本作の“主役”は、作家が生まれた頃から慣れ親しみ、今も所有している一つの火鉢。日露戦争で中国大陸に出兵した祖父が入手したらしい有田焼の火鉢は、姿形を変えぬまま、およそ百年を生き抜いてきた。火鉢には、江戸時代の旅人たちが描かれていた。現在の山口県防府市で地主の惣領として生まれながら祖父は学問を志して東京へ出て、大学を卒業すると、徒歩で郷里に帰ったという。祖父は、火鉢に描かれた旅人に興趣を覚えたのではないか？ 不動の火鉢に、作家は有為転変の来歴を与え、「旅する火鉢」に想いを馳せる。© NobukoTakagi (P) 2016 Audible, Inc.
