第二回の課題図書は、川端康成の『眠れる美女』（新潮文庫）。前後不覚に眠らせられた裸の美女と一夜を過ごせる「隠れ里」を舞台に、そこを訪れる江口老人の妄執と心の内を描いた名作です。「最後の一線」を越えてはならないという唯一のルールの下、ノーベル賞作家の描く「究極のエロチシズム」が展開されます。
そして今回の “一緒に読む人”は、川端文学の熱狂的な読者である、作家の石田衣良さん。石田さんは『眠れる美女』の、「文章の見事さ、感覚表現の冴え、デカダンスを突き抜け黒々と澄んだロマンティシズム」に、一読して打ちのめされたといいます。その後『眠れる美女』に触発されて、設定を真逆にした『娼年』を書き上げました。そんな石田さんと、川端の小説技巧、フェティシズム、美意識などを味わっていきたいと思います。
