Summary

全（一）～（四）の最終章である（四）のみを読んだ。以下（一）～（三）のあらすじとコメントを記す。（一）市九郎は主人の愛妾お弓と情を通じ成敗されそうになるが、逆に主人を殺めてしまう。お弓は金目のものを集めて一緒に逃げようと誘う。（二）昼は茶屋を営み、夜は強盗。あるとき市九郎は心ならずも若夫婦を殺め、己の罪深さに目覚める。強欲なお弓と別れる決心をする。（三）美濃で僧侶になった市九郎は名を了海と改め、罪滅ぼしのため全国行脚の旅に出る。大分県中津の《鎖渡し》という崖沿いの難所で、転落する人々を救うために市九郎はトンネルを掘り始めた。はじめは馬鹿にしていた人たちも市九郎が長年掘り続けるうちに支援してくれるようになった。【コメント】世の人々のために精進の限りを尽くして了海（市九郎）がはからずも救い得たのは、ほかならぬ己の心だった。実之助も同様である。彼も己の心を救い得たのだ。二人ともそのようなことは意識しなかったし望みもしなかった。世の人々が安全に通れるように洞門をうがつという悲願。そこに己の身を捨てることで実に思いがけなくも己の心を得たのである。
