「一、上代における国家統一の情勢」「二、万世一系の皇室という観念の生じまた発達した歴史的事情」の大きく二章に分けられた本作は、「古事記」「日本書記」への資料的批判を展開しながらも皇室そのものを否定せず、「天皇制は時勢の変化に応じて変化しており、民主主義と天皇制は矛盾しない」という主張で天皇制維持を論じている。
皇室の国民との関わりを、理知的に説いたこの論文は、令和の時代を迎えた現在でも、一読の価値があるだろう。
