■作品について-初出は1915(大正4)年発行の「日本少年」。 小川未明の作品にいくつか登場する『赤い色をした船』が、 物語の鍵となっている作品。人情を求めて北の港町にやってきた貧しい爺と子供。 二人に対する町の人々の振る舞いを通して語られる社会批判が、 全体的に暗く重い情景と合わさって独特の雰囲気を醸し出している。■あらすじ-冬もすぐそこに迫る港町。そこに人情を求めてやってきた貧しい爺と子供。 町民はその二人に非情に接し、町を追い出してしまう。寒さに震える二人を大きな波が襲い、二人は行方不明に。ある日、突如黒い旗を翻した真っ赤な船が港に現れ、時を同じくして 行方の分からなかった貧しい子供が町を再び訪れる。財宝を片手に食料や衣服を求める子供だったが、 またしても、町民は財宝を偽者や盗品と疑い子供を追い出す。その日、町から火が上がり、強風に煽られて町は焼け野原になってしまった。
