 傾国の美女をめぐる、中島敦の歴史小説

陳に嫁いだ夏姫は控えめだがとても美しく、またそのせいでしばしば問題を引き起こしてしまう。

夏姫は御叔の妻でありながら霊公をはじめ複数の男たちと関係を持っていたが、当人たちは誰も気にしはていなかった。
しかし御叔が不可解な死を遂げた後、御叔と夏姫の子・徴舒は父の死への懐疑や母と男たちの関係が許せないことから、霊公を弑する。
その内乱をきっかけに陳は楚に侵略され、徴舒は処刑されてしまう…。


中島敦（なかじま・あつし）
昭和時代前期の小説家。1909年東京生れ。東大国文科卒。
祖父は漢学者中島撫山、伯父にも漢学者が多く、父は中学の漢文教師。
1933年横浜高等女学校の教師となり、かたわら作家を志して習作にはげんだ。
持病の喘息悪化のため、転地療養を兼ねて41年パラオの南洋庁に赴任する。
唐代の伝奇「人虎伝」を素材にした「山月記」が深田久弥の推挽で42年2月の「文学界」に掲載され文壇にデビュー。同年5月発表の《光と風と夢》も好評で以後創作に専念。
パラオ南洋庁書記の職を辞して作家生活に入ろうとしたが、同年12月持病の喘息のために夭折した。代表作に「李陵(りりょう)」「弟子」「光と風と夢」など。©2022 PanRolling Asian World Literature
