岡崎城下の端れ近く、西照寺裏の藪の中に一棟の廃屋がある。半ば腐った茅の屋根、曲がった柱、傾いた軒、崩れた壁の穴から灯がもれている、とても人の住居とは思えない家に、六郎兵衛は妻の文江と二人で暮らしていた。
ある日、六郎兵衛は佐藤主計をいう客を連れて来る。文江に酒の支度を頼むと、同じ境遇の二人はささやかながら有意義な夜を過ごした。
翌日、文江の姿を見た六郎兵衛は、ある決心をする……。
