伊勢二見の小料理屋『ふじむら』のお民は、ふじむら小町などど呼ばれ、客に人気があった。
梶井半之助がその店に来た時、お民は初めから彼に惹きつけられた。
美男ではないし、笑うと目が糸を引いたように細くなるし、背はあまり高くないし、どこと言って取り柄のない風貌だったが、温かくふんわりとつつまれ感じで、たちまち深い契が出来た。
ある夜、彼はすぶ濡れになって店に来、『人を斬ってきた』と言った。
