Summary

どぶ鼠の伝次は元々はへっつい直しのこそどろ。今では世間に知られたくない秘め事を探る商売――影聞きで食い繋いでいる。
その伝次、飛脚を商う「兎屋」の主人・浮世之介にお呼ばれされた。
「狢亭」と名付けられた瀟洒な棲家に上がると、奇妙な髷にかぶいた着物をまとった浮世之介が手酌で酒を呑んでいる。
その横に座しているのは、なんと文化堂の隠居・善左衛門。文化堂は江戸では知らぬ者がいない、筆と硯を扱う老舗の大店だ。
善左衛門によれば、一人息子の嫁・おすまに悪い虫がついたらしく、内々に調べてほしいという。
おすまは、もともと深川で人気の羽織芸者だったが、今では娘も生まれて、内儀としての威厳も備わってきたばかりらしい。
そのおすまと間男との縁を切らせたら、最低でも手切れ金の一割を支払うと言い切る。手切れ金が三百両なら三十両、千両なら百両だ。
滅法割りがいい仕事に、伝次は生唾を飲み込んだはいいが……。
