私はあるとき、旧友であるロデリック・アッシャーからの手紙を受け取った。中には彼の体の疾患や心の病、そしてそれらをいくらか軽くするために唯一の友人である私に会いたいということが書かれており、私はそれに応じてアッシャー家を訪れる。しかし陰鬱で古い屋敷の雰囲気に始まり、あまりに荒涼とした周囲の風景、短い間に変わり果ててしまったアッシャーの姿、アッシャーの愛する妹マデリン嬢の重病など、ありとあらゆる物が私に此の屋敷への違和感を覚えさせた。その後数日間、私はアッシャーの気を少しでも紛らわせるために彼と共に過ごす。しかしある晩、アッシャーは私に突然、マデリン嬢の死を告げる。その後彼の希望により、私たちは彼女の亡骸を安置室に納める。それ以降さらにアッシャーの病状は悪化する。その数日後の嵐の夜に、古い書物を二人で読んでいるとアッシャーは私に、自分たちはマデリン嬢を生きたまま棺に入れてしまったこと、そして彼女が今扉の外にいることを叫ぶ。アッシャーの言ったとおり出てきたマデリン嬢は彼に寄りかかり、激しい断末魔と共にアッシャーは死ぬ。私は恐怖のあまり屋敷から逃げ出す。その後屋敷に延びている亀裂が一気に広がり、壁を真っ二つに裂いた。そして私の足元の沼は、そのアッシャー家を飲み込んでしまう…。 ※本作品は発表時の未熟な時代背景から、今日の社会では一般的でなく、不適切と思われる表現が含まれている箇所がございます。しかし作品のオリジナル性を最大限に尊重し、なるべく当時のまま忠実に再現することを優先いたしました。(C)2008青空文庫
