Преступники не только похитили огромную сумму в двести тысяч рублей, но и устроили самую настоящую бойню. Убиты шесть жандармов, старший кондуктор и сотрудник банка, сопровождавшие вагон. Судя по всему - орудовали матерые уголовники. По удивительному стечению обстоятельств Эраст Петрович Фандорин следует с супругой в попутном поезде и оказывается на месте преступления почти одновременно с жандармами. Начальник железнодорожно-жандармского управления умоляет Эраста Петровича помочь ему в расследовании. Судя по всему, у Фандорина просто нет выбора.
