Summary

Have you fallen for this international best-selling novelist's sizzling hot entrance into the world of romance?

It's the opportunity of a lifetime:

Feyi is about to be given the chance to escape the City’s blistering heat for a dream island holiday: poolside cocktails, beach sunsets, and elaborate meals. And as the sun goes down on her old life our heroine also might just be ready to open her heart to someone new....

The only problem is, she's falling for the one man she absolutely can’t have.

Addictive, entertaining, compelling listen

Am only half-way through but so enthusiastic about this listen I had to share…

I like well crafted literary writing and this is well written but in a different way from what I normally dip into. This is all about some utterly sassy, convincing, lead protagonists. It’s dominated by dazzling good dialogue: vibrant, authentic which weaves around the storytelling.

It’s all about relationships, two fabulous friends whose interactions are believable, touching, and make you laugh out loud at times. It’s about discovery of love, which avenue will she ultimately reside in I’ve as yet to see, but I’m drinking every word in. It moves so naturally you could easily miss the craft and skill of the author, but on the other hand that’s why it works so well,

Highly recommend.
Will seek out other work by Emezi straight after…

Abandoned

I have to say I totally disagree with the positive review I’ve just read. I knew this was a romantic storyline with a twist and think I chose it because the narrator sounded good in the sample extract and the NY Times had reviewed it favourably but I’m about to stop bothering listening I find it so tiresome. I don’t find the prose particularly beguiling and the constant “fucking” (her terminology) going on is a bore after a while as are all those totally unbelievable hot thirty somethings prancing around in their sequins and heels. There is an interesting angle of course on how someone deals with grief and PTSD and maybe the novel darkens later on but so far I find the treatment pretty facile. So she gets to have some steamy sex in a bathroom at party for the first time in five years after the death of her husband (this isn’t a spoiler it happens in the first few pages). Where’s the interrogation of that really? We hear the unlikely titillating details but that’s not surely all that is going on. Oh well. I’m reading the wrong book for me clearly! Hope others enjoy it more.

Just wow!

The story is great, I love the complexity of the main character. The way this book (spoiler alert) deals with grief is so unexpected and literally cracked me wide open in a way that was incredibly healing. This book is a gift to anyone that has had a challenging time with grief, I felt seen and it gave me insight into my own process with how I dealt with the loss of loved ones.

Outstanding writing

There was not a single chapter where my breath was not catching in my throat. A beautiful story of love, friendship, tragedy and hope. Mostly hope. I almost wish I could go back and re-read it for the first time not knowing what will happen.

A Must Read

I was introduced to this book and did not regret it. it provoked much discussion about morals, sexuality, expectations...It kept you reading throughout and the narration was good too. This is a sticky, spicy story. If you like messy relationships you will love this. Not your typical rom com.

Everything A Contemporary Romance Novel Should Be

This was my first Akwaeke Emezi novel and it has acted, as the perfect introduction to this Author's work.

Contemporary, pacey and accurately observed in all aspects. Not to mention incredibly sexy in the best possible way. This is everything a contemporary romance should be. Although it has to be said, I found Feyi's final relationship choice questionable and problematic; to say the very least. Bahni Turpin's narration style was also a perfect fit for this Audiobook. Thoroughly enjoyable, and highly recommended!

Thank you for this reminder that we live

What a beautiful testimony to love post survival, a connection that reminds us all that we are alive, even if it never lasts. I loved this. A reminder we live past grief.
