Story
Tensions have been running high in White River as it approaches the anniversary of a fatal shooting of a black motorist by a local police officer. The economically depressed, racially polarized city is on edge, confronted with angry demonstrations, arson, and looting. In the midst of the turmoil, a White River police officer is shot dead by an unknown sniper. As the town spirals out of control, local authorities approach Dave Gurney to conduct an independent investigation of the shooting. But when he zeroes in on peculiar aspects of the individual murders that follow, his involvement is suddenly terminated.

Story
Detective Miles Jensen is called to the lawless town of Santa Mondega to investigate a spate of murders. This would all be quite ordinary in those rough streets, except that Jensen is the Chief Detective of Supernatural Investigations. The breakneck plot centres around a mysterious blue stone, 'The Eye of the Moon', and the men (and women) who all want to get their hands on it: a mass murderer with a drink problem, a hit man who thinks he's Elvis and a pair of monks among them.

Summary
Could a nightmare be used as a murder weapon? That's the provocative question confronting Gurney in the thrilling new installment in this series of international bestsellers. The former NYPD star homicide detective is called upon to solve a baffling puzzle: Four people who live in different parts of the country and who seem to have little in common, report having had the same dream - a terrifying nightmare involving a bloody dagger with a carved wolf's head on the handle. All four are subsequently found with their wrists cut - apparent suicides - and the weapon used in each case was a wolf's head dagger.
Police zero in quickly on Richard Hammond, a controversial psychologist who conducts hypnotherapy sessions at a spooky old Adirondack inn called Wolf Lake Lodge. It seems that each of the victims had gone there to meet with Hammond shortly before turning up dead.
Troubled by odd holes in the official approach to the case, Gurney begins his own investigation - an action that puts him in the crosshairs of not only an icy murderer and the local police but the darkest corner of the federal government. As ruthless as the blizzard trapping him in the sinister eeriness of Wolf Lake, Gurney's enemies set out to keep him from the truth at any cost - including an all-out assault on the sanity of his beloved wife Madeleine.
With his emotional resources strained to the breaking point, Gurney must throw himself into a deadly battle of wits with the most frightening opponent he has ever faced.
Wolf Lake is the new work by a writer hailed by the New York Times as "masterly" - and it furthers the adventures of Dave Gurney, a detective reviewers have compared to Sherlock Holmes.

What a disappointment.
Loved the first two Gurney novels...endured the third, returned the fourth. The new narrator reads like this is the first time he's seen the words and I don't care about the absolutely uninteresting minutiae of Gurney's marriage to his painful wife. I want a murder mystery, not an Aga saga. Beyond disappointed.

Hooked from the opening page
Would you consider the audio edition of Wolf Lake to be better than the print version?
The setting in a remote location in formidable weather helps to build an atmosphere of isolation and supense. The characters are believeable, really well drawn and the story unfolded with some surprises. Listening to it made these elements all the more enjoyable.
What other book might you compare Wolf Lake to, and why?
The premise is similar to groups of people in an isolated location and who are in danger, some meeting grisly ends. Along the lines of The House on Haunted Hill. Dark Matter also evokes this kind of atmosphere.
What three words best describe Christopher Lane’s performance?
The wrong narrator
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
Yes, absolutely.
Any additional comments?
Will certainly read more books by this author, an excellent first experience.

Performance spoils the book.
Have really enjoyed the first 4 Gurney books which were excellently narrated. New production for 5th book was awful - nearly gave up on it several times. Narrators voice was very monotone with very little difference between characters. Was. Hale gong at times to know who was talking. Poor decision by the publisher to change production agencies.

I’ve really enjoyed these books so far - brilliant in fact.
But, we get a new narrator now rather than the excellent Jeff Harding and it’s destroyed the characters. I’m only 15 mins in but just NOT enjoying it!

This one gets a little gruesome!
John Vernon returned to his original Dave Gurney character with this book. After returning the last book I was skeptical and it took me over a year with this book in my wish list before I purchased it. I am happy to say that I am keeping this one and am sorry I waited so long!
A $1,000 per night for a room at a lodge located in upstate NY and an intensive therapy session with the resident shrink. You wouldn't expect the guests to then go home and commit suicide. That's how it's supposed to look until Gurney is hired to look into four almost identical deaths.
This is a good mystery that borders on a horror story towards the end. There's a blizzard, the cars have been tampered with so they can't be driven, miles from anywhere, electricity goes out and there's a killer on the loose with an axe killing who ever is still there. Of course there's more then one suspect and for the series to continue Gurney must figure out who before it's too late.
Christopher Lane does an excellent job narrating.
Very entertaining and HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

John Verdon is back!
Loved the first two in this series but had been a tad disappointed with the last one (Peter Pan). So glad to see Mr. Verdon is back in this one. With clever explanations that you simply didn't see coming (but could have), tons of interesting (if improbable) characters, and fun dialogue. Highly entertaining. And the reader is pretty good as well.

Just an engaging Who-Dunnit
Nope, this isn't the great American novel. Nor has it any pretensions to literally excellence. Characters here aren't deeper than Dostoyevsky nor are scenes cleverly resonant. But if you enjoy playing Clue and wonder how Cornel Mustard got a wrench into the study... Well here's a great way to distract yourself from a day's tensions.
Christopher Lane does a fine job of creating an ensemble cast of characters who, if you will just suspend disbelief at the gnarly plot engine, will tease you to find out how this thing ends.

I'd rather see the movie
There is no movie but I think it would have made a good one. It's a true detective drama that get has a deep focus on the steps of the trade. The narrator was fantastic. I really like his voice as Gurney. The challenge was keeping up with all of the details while listening as I work and the long wait for action. However all the details can be visualized in the read and the watching of the movie. Listening to it leaves a lot of gaps in my imagination of the story.

Another Goodie
John Verdon might be my newest favorite author. The man can weave and unravel a tangled web of suspense like none other. Wolf Lake is such a tale, suspenseful and intriguing, keeping the reader guessing. So, why not five stars? I listened to the audible version and, frankly, it requires more than casual attention to detail. If you, dear reader, are one who dissects every detail , then go for it. If, on the other hand, you have the slightest ADD syndrome, you might find yourself confused by the plot, the characters, etc. Be that as it may, the work is solid and entertaining.
