Summary

“Charming characters and twists that keep the pages turning.” (Southern Living)

A man with a painful past. A child with a doubtful future. And a shared journey toward healing for both their hearts.

It begins on the shaded town square in a sleepy Southern town. A spirited seven-year-old has a brisk business at her lemonade stand. But the little girl’s pretty yellow dress can’t quite hide the ugly scar on her chest.

Her latest customer, a bearded stranger, drains his cup and heads to his car, his mind on a boat he's restoring at a nearby lake. The stranger understands more about the scar than he wants to admit. And the beat-up bread truck careening around the corner with its radio blaring is about to change the trajectory of both their lives.

Before it's over, they'll both know there are painful reasons why crickets cry...and that miracles lurk around unexpected corners.

Soooo boring...and preachy.

The narrator was ok. The overdone Southern accent was a little hard to swallow at times and he butchered some medical terms repeatedly.
The story was excruciatingly boring. Long narrations about God were very preachy. God was in literally every chapter (which wouldn't have bothered me so much if it had been at least mentioned in the description), improbable medical plot, the superhuman doctor's secret was mundane, very long drawn-out flashbacks that weren't relevant to the plotline. There were long periods where I wasn't actually listening and I still didn't lose the story. And allowing this stranger, a grown man, to get so close to this little girl creeped me out.
I'm bummed I wasted a credit and I'm shocked that I finished it.

Worthwhile read

I really enjoyed this story, although much of the circumstances seemed a bit unbelievable; I very much appreciated the author’s ability to incorporate spirituality in the character’s everyday lives. We rarely get to see that in mainstream media any longer; and it was uplifting and encouraging.

Should be a movie!

This was an incredible book and honestly should be made into a movie! I fell in love with the characters, and the plot took twists I wasn't expecting. As always, Charles Martin did not disappoint. I am working on reading all of his books and haven't read one yet that I didn't absolutely love!

simply stunning

This book by Charles Martin didn't disappoint. As usual, this book grabbed me from the first chapter and didn't let go of my attention. The story was captivating and the narrator was perfectly suited to the story and the characters. I highly recommend this one!
