Summary

Callie Kingston's life as an Orange County housewife isn't as perfect as it seems. Her husband isn't the same man she fell in love with, and her home is no longer her safe haven. But she's determined to keep up appearances, especially when it comes to concealing the bruises her husband's temper leaves behind.

Until Cole Luciano moves into her friend's house across the street. He's abrasive and rude, but his steel-blue eyes tell a different story - one with dark secrets.

After suffering through an unspeakable tragedy, Cole settles into his sister's pool house until he can get back on his feet. He's convinced that he deserves to live with the guilt he harbors from his past, and wants nothing more than to be left alone. Yet he can't seem to stay away from his beautiful neighbor. He sees right through Callie's carefully orchestrated lies and is desperate to help her.

Callie discovers more underneath Cole's hard exterior. But when Callie finally finds the courage to create a new life for herself, Cole isn't sure if there's enough of his heart left to give in.

Can two broken souls heal each other, or are some just too damaged to be put back together?

Contains mature themes.

PERFECTION

I swear I wanted to read it as soon as I saw the author’s TikTok about it! I binged on audio and finished in a day. Definitely recommend, be warned of sensitive content and possible bouts of tears of sadness and joy!

Wonderful and well rounded story

Such a great story filled with hope. Even touching on some pretty tough subjects, this story allowed for hope. And have a second chance to anyone willing to take it.

One of my favorite stories

This is one of my favorite books, because it’s so raw and real, alongside being beautifully written. Due to that I’m not willing to give it less than five stars. Alex Kydd smashed it out of the park, and I liked Elizabeth Russell’s female narrations. With that being said her male narrations left something to be desired, particularly with Cole. Cole was one of my favorite characters, but he sounds like a raspy old man who smokes 2 packs a day and it’s just not at all how I pictured him.

All in all, I would definitely recommend reading it but also wanted to be honest that there’s something to be desired.

A tear jerker

Great story. Good listen, loved it really I did, loved the male reader and the girl was great too but had some weird boy voices but all in all a great listen. Be prepared to shed a few tears though.

Painful to listen to

I cringed and jumped almost every time Elizabeth Russell voiced men and children. It was almost stressful to listen to.

Rough Narration

I would definitely look up the trigger warnings for this book but overall Iiked it and thought it was a cute story.

For me the female narrator was rough to listen to when it came to the male voices. To me the male lead sounded like a heavy smoker and it was hard to take the serious moments seriously.

The Narrators could have been better

I will finish this story cause I have already wasted a credit on it and because I'm curious about how it ends. Callie's narrator goes between sounding like a robot and an over exaggerated gruff male voice. It pains me to listen to it. I wish the narrator sounded more like she does with the character in-between dialog cause then it's not so bad. Cole's narrator makes me feel sad for the character but he is hard to understand.
I'm tempted to buy the paper back so I don't have to finish the audio version.

Entertaining Story- narration hard to get past

I liked the story and felt like I was in the moment with what Callie was going through. What I couldn’t get over was the choice of voice for Paul. It’s like the narrator was trying way to hard to make him sound like one of those funny, rich Beverly Hills-bougie types. It didn’t even sound like they were remotely the same age and I thought it was a joke for the first few minutes of the book with how comical-sounding he was, “oh mumsy and poopsie and dahhhhhling, I simply cannot comprehend!” So much cringe that it ruined the book for me whenever he would speak.
