Summary

The well-known TV auctioneer's entertaining and informative memoir of a life under the hammer.

When Philip Serrell - now well known for his television appearances - gave up teaching to become a professional auctioneer, he thought he was embarking on a sensible and safe career...a quiet life in the country with no surprises. How wrong he was.

In What Am I Bid? he tells of life after the events he described in An Auctioneer's Lot (2006) and Sold to the Man with the Tin Leg (2007), to bring his story up to date. From dodgy cars to fakes in the saleroom, angry livestock, mangled silverware and tortuous - not to mention muddy - experiences in local markets and farm sales, Philip has been there, done that and got the hoofprints on his suit to prove it.

Vintage work

I'm a big fan of Serrell and his old world charm and that gift shines throughout this book. Serrell tells his yarns with a professionalism of a BAFTA award winning actor and he retained me interest from beginning to end.

Brilliant and histerical

A great set of stories leading through his life in the auction world, blended together well.
if you are in the auction world then you can start laughing before the story as you may know what happens next but even I got some lovely surprises and snorts of laughter in.
the audiobook accompanied me whilst cataloguing sale and hearing his voice reading it really took me on the journey.

A wonderful warm, witty & entertaining gem!

I loved Philip Serrell from Bargain Hunt days & various other antiques programmes, so I was happy to see his book on Audible & looked forward to hearing it. I was a tiny bit concerned it might be a bit dry compared to the many shiny professional versions I’ve listened to - but I needn’t have worried. Read by the author, this is like snuggling underneath a big fluffy blanket, it captures you & takes you on a delightful, witty, quietly brilliant tale of a career lived (& still living). I didn’t expect the cast of quirky characters, who I really enjoyed. And I was completely enthralled by the story as each part unfolded, so much so that I listened to it from start to finish over 2 days & was very disappointed to finish it. The last time I did that was with the Harry Potter books on tape! I thoroughly recommend it & will be back to listen again soon because I loved it so much!

Absolutely Glorious

I adored this book.
Philip Serrell is the most entertaining narrator and his stories of a life spent working with antiques is one of the funniest things I have listened to in a really long time. His observations are so astute and I started to feel like I knew the characters he was describing.

I do hope this gets the attention it deserves and I hope that Philip Serrell will write more more books in the future.

Great listen.

A very enjoyable ramble through a third chapter of Philip Serrell's life. It's full of his typical self-deprecating humour.

Lovely book

A well written and honest account of Philips career, though I would have loved to hear more about the disasters as well as the finds and the people. I still laugh when thinking about windy.
