Summary

Heartache and a search for a place to write a new novel lead Professor William Bates on a journey from the California coast straight into the very dark past of Iowa.

A lakeside house at a fabled old lake provides much more than the peace and solitude he'd hoped for in 1972.

In the dark of the night comes the crying of babies. The ghosts of past visit his dreams and a mystery woman plays out a ghastly vision at the lake. The Villisca Ax murder house just to the south reaches out with demons that still exist to this very day. The Clarinda Lunatic Asylum sits just a few miles further down the road with dark answers as well. A mystery man named Carl appears and is another part of the connection with the place they call Viking Lake.

Professor Bates meets a woman from across the lake at a convent out of time and dimension. Now they must solve the hauntings on the lake before he is free to travel back to 1972 or stay trapped in 1945.
