Summary

Two years have passed since Vita was arrested by the Inquisition, and her time in prison has not been kind to her.

Somehow more psychopathic AND more human

I keep being amazed by Maher's ability to journey into psychopathy and then managing to stick the landing.

Often being 'evil' is portrayed as a very binary 'good' v 'bad' with no sense of the internal morality 'evil' may have.

This series does a wonderful job of showing how fluid and fragile 'heroism' and the perception of 'good' and 'bad' really are.

The only thing is that for some this great and bizarre world she has created might be too 'wild' to be taken seriously enough to get to appreciate the amazing character work and storytelling

Just as good as the first 2

I was excited to know that book 3 was coming and when it came out, it was everything I wanted. More of Vita and the world surrounding her. The only downside is waiting for book 4.

Good continuation to the story

Decent third book, with less world building than before. I wish power scaling wasn’t so fast, but still enjoyable journey.

Narrator is lazy

I love this series but Jessica does it 0 favors, multiple times it sounds as if she's using her phone in her car to record, including the sound of traffic in the background. In addition she regularly loses track of whos talking and such, she'll make easy choices like during the Vita Mellik parts but as soon as she gets into the meat of it where she doesn't have to put in the extra effort she slips.

As for the book itself it seems like several parts break from the established character of a person for plot reasons.

spoiler example below

I very much doubt that with the amount of animancers and animavore that are at best grey in animosity, including one that literally takes bodies, towards her that Penelope had not a single plan to counter it being preformed on her and soul damage. And Vita's underwhelming reaction? I half expected her to yonk, turn Penelope into a revenant then command her to return her soul back to it's original state. I also feel the need to point out how despite Vita needed to change the bodies brain to be hers a complete hollowing and takeover of Penelope's was accomplished in a hour tops without biomancy as the previous books said that that link is unknown and that even the splice inquisitor just made the soul just ignore rather than actually forget.

Love this series!

I'm only 3 chapters in but I already have to write a review. I am absolutely in love with this series. if there's another book in this series I don't think I'll have the ability to wait for the audible to come out but instead read the book. It is that good.

edit I finished the audiobook and this was a masterpiece from the story to the narrator. I really hope the next book is released soon.

1/4 of this book is Vita

the rest is infuriating, useless and distracting filler. I mean theres got to be about 20 different povs throughout this hot garbage. the chapters of our mc are good though. too bad it's only 8hrs of a 26hr book.

A fabulous story right up until chapter 37

While I may change this review if I ever finish this story, I have to point out to the author, and to the many readers that give great evidence of agreeing with me in many other books, that when you hold identity and character as a core element in a story and then brazenly violate it, it does not actually create a sense of humility, interesting drama, or contribution to a story worthy of noting. It doesn't happen in most of the stories I read or listen to, but when I come across self sabotage writing like that, it just turns me off from the story. I no longer have anything to latch on to. When something hold as sacred is cast aside, or some quality considered inviolate is then made to be exactly the opposite, I can't help feeling hurt and angry at the author for stringing me along with hopes of a decent or better story, just to frankly give up on that story like it wasn't worth their time or effort to come up with more ideas.

We readers adore good writing! We praise good writers and happily pay for good books! At what time did it become so inconvenient to write that one has to openly "piss" on their followers in retaliation for their attention!?

Again, if I do ever get around to reading further and find out that the story does a very respectable effort to redeem the blunder that turned me off from it, I will probably change this review, but good readers and listeners aught to know that such a disappointment is ahead of them in this book, even after the very talented writing that preceded it.

Continues a unique story

I don't think I've come across any story like this. It has a deep flippancy towards morality and identity that feels unique. None of the characters are stupid, none are unempathetic, and rooting for actually evil characters is just... the story is a real ride.

There are some odd production glitches, and the narration is occasionally a little hard to follow because it's rushed. But there's one chapter that's just brilliantly narrated and from that point on mistakes are easily overlooked. You'll know the chapter when you hear it,

Good book. But has weird audio issues.

Error in the recording on chapter 41. at 12 min 15 seconds into the chapter. the narrator says "has offered" while in character, then you can her shuffle a page and correct herself out of character saying "had, had offered" then goes back to narrating.

Aside from that one major issue, the recording is full of odd background sounds, like the narrator recorded it in a less than sound proof room, and you an almost here what sounds like a car drive by in the background.

Would not be bad if it only happened once, but it happens about 50 times throughout the book.

Good Cliffhangers

I almost didn't pick this book up based on another review saying that Vita was barely involved in this volume. They said she was mentioned maybe 8 out of 26 hours throughout the book. Now I didn't count the minutes or anything but I have no idea what that reviewer was talking about.

Perspectives were split mainly between about 4 different characters but Vita was definitely a major perspective throughout.

That aside, I'm very content with the way the book ended. Near the end I was getting really riled up about the way the story was progressing but the author rounded it all together in some pretty satisfying cliffhangers in my opinion and it sounds like the story won't end here. Which is awesome because I'm loving the main characters and the world she Natalie has built.
