Summary

Once again Liane Moriarty uses her unique, razor-sharp observational skills to sift through the emerging fault lines of seemingly happy families.

If only they'd said no....

What if they hadn't gone? That's the question Clementine can't stop asking herself.

It was just a backyard barbeque. They didn't know their hosts that well. They were friends of friends. They could so easily have said no. But she and her husband, Sam, said yes, and now they can never change what they did and didn't do that beautiful winter's day. Six responsible adults. Three cute kids. One yapping dog. It's a normal weekend in the suburbs. What could possibly go wrong?

Okay listen but not the best, too longwinded

Is there anything you would change about this book?

Yes, the fact that for most of the story you do not know what has happened at the bar b q. It is like listening to a story but not knowing what it is about. It is far too long with not enough happening. So much time is spent on different aspects of their lives such as the audition and it's just not that interesting.

What was most disappointing about Liane Moriarty’s story?

It takes too long to get going and I wasn't keen on most of the characters, I didn't find them particularly likeable. When you did find out what had happened in all its detail it was quite a good plot but by that time I wasn't really that bothered.

Did Caroline Lee do a good job differentiating each of the characters? How?

The narration takes a bit of getting used to but it is easy to differentiate between the characters.I liked Erica's mother at the meal, she was funny!

Did Truly Madly Guilty inspire you to do anything?

No, apart from reach the end.

Any additional comments?

It was a good listen in parts but the almost tedious detail spoils it. For me it needed more to happen early on or to be a bit shorter.

The most irritating narrators voice ever!!!!

What disappointed you about Truly Madly Guilty?

I could not listen to the narrator whining on for another chapter!!!

Has Truly Madly Guilty put you off other books in this genre?

Yes because they are all narrated by the same person Caroline Lee and I cannot listen anymore which is a shame because I love Liane Moriarty's books

How did the narrator detract from the book?

Completely awful!!!!

Another triumph

Liane Moriarty is a genius writer. Her books are complex enough to be satisfying but accessible enough to carry you through them on a strong thread of interest. I read my first of hers in paperback form and all the rest on Audible. Caroline Lee is a superb narrator. Up there with the very best ( think Sean Barrett or Stephen Pacey). I hope Liane and Caroline's partnership continues for many years.

Very slow and boring

I hate to leave a book unfinished but it was really hard to finish this one. Over several months I did persevere, but I am not sure if it was worth the effort. (and it was an effort ). The pace was too slow by far and content did not support such a dragging pace.

Gave up after chapter 5 as it was so tedious, narrator was awful.

Way too boring. Save your money! Gave up during chapter 5 , as the narrator was so irritating.

Too dragged out

I have been patiently awaiting for a reason to continue with this book. In her usual fashion, Liane builds up the story to some main event, slowly building up the individual characters.
However, the build up in this story is way too slow and very dull - never mind the lack of a tasty meaty story, there is no bone to chew on nothing, nothing captivating or worth holding on to while waiting on the main event or raison d'être. I'm sorry but this book has not lived up to the hype. Maybe one day I'll persevere to the end...maybe.

slow

Could have been half the length without affecting the story at all. Characters so well developed in places it was quite dull.

Liane Moriarty does it again - 5 star

I have listened to all of Liane Moriarty's novels and this one is as good if not better than Big Little Lies. She is by far my favourite author and she develops her characters, plot lines and twists so well and delivers them with finesse.
Caroline Lee is such a perfect match for the stories Liane Moriarty writes.
Can't recommend this author enough.

Compelling Reading!!!

What did you like most about Truly Madly Guilty?

There are so many different stories linked into one. Each character is interesting too. Liane Moriarty is such a good writer, so unusual and different. Some if the 'throw away' lines are just hysterical I was laughing out loud a lot of times. The only tiny criticism I would have is the over use of the exclamation 'What?!!!' It was a tad irritating

What did you like best about this story?

It was good how each of the characters had their own reason for blaming themselves for what happened at the BBQ, how the event was told from each persons perspective

What does Caroline Lee bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

I find Caroline Lee to be quite an eccentric reader. She's not the usual run of the mill kind of narrator, she is very different. I have read all of Liane Moriarty's books to date, and it took me a while to get used to her voice - now that I have, I love her voice! She really brings the story to life.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

When I found out what actually happened at the BBQ!!!! I was totally shocked, I was just not expecting that!! Also, towards the end when the other little girl told her grandma what happened

Any additional comments?

I just love this author!! It's not chic-lit, it's much more than that. Her books are very intriguing. Can't wait for her next one!!

No Different to Other Liane Moriarty Work

Same painstaking trickling out of information to the reader. Liane Moriarty makes a meal of scraps. It is thrilling the first time one reads her works, tiresome the second, and exhausting the third.

Caroline Lee reads well, but often reads negative emotion into what could be neutral statements.

I did not have enough patience for this book

I loved the characters and the relationships between them but I felt like the author teased you far too much. You were given such tiny pieces of info after long drawn out stories. It felt like drawing blood from a stone. I enjoyed the book way more after I knew what had happened on the day. (which was about 10 hours in)

Truly Madly Guilty

I found the book hard to get into, but then kept on wanting to know more. Amazing how one event can trigger so much..
By the end of the book, I was into it and enjoyed it.

Not my favorite

While I've enjoyed several Liane Moriarty stories, this one just took way too long to come together. The last 1/3 of the book was very good, but it was hard for me to keep going to get there. Caroline Lee, the narrator, was absolutely superb which made the trudge through the first part of the story worth it.
