Summary

Superb

Where does Toute la lumière que nous ne pouvons voir rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

What an excellent piece of literature! I listened to the audio version in French while following it as a Kindle book in English. The combination worked well: I learned a lot of French while enjoying a superb story.

What did you like best about this story?

It is quite fragmented: jumping around the years, forwards and backwards. And focusing on the lives of half a dozen characters. Developing the narrative a little at a time, before switching to another time, another place. It really keeps you on your toes.

Which scene did you most enjoy?

Denis Laustriat is an excellent reader: even a French learner like me can pick up most of the words, yet he doesn't hesitate. He builds the excitement.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

Doerr provides multiple perspectives, human ones, on a great tragedy. He sympathetically details the viewpoints in an engaging way.

Any additional comments?

Don't expect happy endings. But if you enjoy fiction where you learn about history while being totally absorbed, then this is the book for you.

Good read

Really good performance of a hauntingly good book. The French translation disguises the occasional irritating americanism in the original. My only criticism was the choice of music which was jarring and did not do the book justice. A little "Claire de Lune" or something "Debussyesque" would have been preferable.
