Desde su fundación, la historia de México Tenochtitlan se plasmó en los tlacuilolli (códices) por los tlacuiloque (los que escribían pintando). Luego de la colonización del Anáhuac, los descendientes de la nobleza nahua, algunos de ellos mestizos, convertidos a la religión católica y, principalmente, nahuatlatos bilingües, comenzaron a escribir la historia de sus ancestros con el alfabeto latino (en náhuatl y en castellano).

Entre los cronistas destacan Hernando de Alvarado Tezozómoc, Fernando de Alva Ixtlilxóchitl, Domingo Chimalpáhin, entre muchos más, hoy casi imposibles de conseguir en librerías.
