Summary
An unconventional woman and a man shrouded in mystery walk a tightrope of desire as they race against a killer to find a top secret invention before it’s too late.
Former trapeze artist Amalie Vaughn moved to Burning Cove to reinvent herself, but things are not going well. After spending her entire inheritance on a mansion with the intention of turning it into a bed-and-breakfast, she learns too late that the villa is said to be cursed. When the first guest, Dr. Norman Pickwell, is murdered by his robot invention during a sold-out demonstration, rumors circulate that the curse is real.
In the chaotic aftermath of the spectacle, Amalie watches as a stranger from the audience disappears behind the curtain. When Matthias Jones reappears, he is slipping a gun into a concealed holster. It looks like the gossip that is swirling around him is true - Matthias evidently does have connections to the criminal underworld.
Matthias is on the trail of a groundbreaking prototype cipher machine. He suspects that Pickwell stole the device and planned to sell it. But now Pickwell is dead and the machine has vanished. When Matthias’s investigation leads him to Amalie’s front door, the attraction between them is intense, but she knows it is also dangerous. Amalie and Matthias must decide if they can trust each other and the passion that binds them, because time is running out.

The narrator is awful!!!!
This narrator sounds like she is first time novice. I felt like screaming because I waited for this book but cannot enjoy it. At times is seems the main character is talking to herself because the voices are barely discernible from each other. From the very beginning as the man forces the girl up the tight rope you begin to realize the problem of “the voice.” I stopped at chapter five... just no more... NO MORE. The narration only gets worse as she begins to chew words with no sense of timing and rhythm. Not worth your credit. Buy a hard copy.

I think this is the first book by Amanda Quick that I did not care that much for. Slow, not enough excitement for me. It was just okay.

Whole Book is Terrible! Buyer beware.
The whole book is terrible. I’m glad I got this as part of a buy one get one sale. I’d been ticked if I paid full price. From the very beginning, I felt like like I was dropped in the story in the middle of the book. The story is stilted. No thought went into the plot. I rarely if ever give bad reviews, but this book is awful.

This is not Jayne Castle writing the books anymore
I used to love Jayne Castle's books. But since 2015 any I come across is written with such a different style, much poorer unfortunately that I cannot stomach the difference. I i do not know who is writing those books now but I would not have such a dislike if that person would write under her own name or pseudonym not to decive the readers.

Poor choice of narrator
Sounds like the reader has a cold instead of sounding like a male character which distracts from the experience

Tightrope review
Story was pretty good! Surprised with the sprinkling of “F bombs” in the dialogue.
Good character development and how the tied into each other.
Narration was well done!

Good story
Not so good narratives on male voices. Especially the hero. It sounds like a voice coming through a metal fan.

Pretty okay
A historical take on Burning Cove and the Jones family. Murder, psychics, theater, and romance.

ORIGINAL! Interesting plot, old Hollywood romance.
Loved it!
This is an international spy mystery with a homespun feel. Set somewhere between 1920-40 CA, USA the characters took my imagination into the world of my grandparents & parents. Whom also had wonderful real life love stories filled with romance and intrigue.
What fun!
The narrator was good but it was slightly hard to follow the dialog since she did not distinguish between character voices. Aside from that it was an enjoyable read.
