through it all I have always laughed.

Count Arthur Strong is a deluded individual who thinks as he appeared in a couple of TV dramas as someone in the background he is an instantly recognizable star. he is someone if you met you would avoid at all costs. However he is a delight to listen too . He loves a drink and is so mean he rarely pays for anything. The comedy is superb and when you listen to him a third or fourth time you are bound to pick something up you missed before. His TV series was not very good but his radio series and this book are a must listen too.

Through It All I Laughed Outloud!

If you're already a Count Arthur fan then the chances are you'll know a lot of the material in this book which is a collection of classic moments from the Count's life, reworked in places, and strung together with some new material. It is in the style of the Radio Count Arthur, rather than the TV Count Arthur.

As a long-term fan myself I couldn't help but love this which was, in effect, a feature-length version of his radio show but with additional characters being described by the Count rather than appearing directly. I have the physical book too but to hear this being performed in the Count's own voice takes it to that extra level. Despite knowing a lot of the ramblings.....I mean anecdotes, I very much enjoyed this and wished it was longer - it brightened up my daily commute to work with many laugh aloud moments.

If you're not familiar with Count Arthur Strong, or have only seen the TV series then this is well worth a listen but be warned this is a deliberately bumbled and farcical biography of an aging "bit-part" actor with delusions of grandeur and won't be to everyone's taste - I advise you to listen to the sample first. If you like comic characters such as John Shuttleworth then this might very well be right up your street.

Character driven comedy at its best

Would you consider the audio edition of Through It All I've Always Laughed to be better than the print version?

The audio version is better than the print version as Count Arthur has such a distinctive voice and turn of phrase.

What other book might you compare Through It All I've Always Laughed to, and why?

I would compare this to the best of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series in its humour. Although one is set on a fictional planet and the other is rooted firmly in the shallow end of Britains post war celebrity circuit, they perfectly evoke what it must be like for the befuddled heroes.

What about Arthur Strong’s performance did you like?

Count Arthur should read more audio books. Celebrity biographies where he could add his personal memories of the subject would be perfect.

OK, but lacking sparkle

When I first listened to the Count Arthur Strong radio show, I thought it was one of the most creative and original radio shows that I had heard for many years. I still think this is true, but this audio book has demonstrated two things. Firstly, that CAS needs some straight men to act as foils and secondly that it is very difficult to keep up a comedic narrative for four hours. So, if you like his radio show, then there will be nuggets of comedy here that will put a smile on your face, but you may also find it rather patchy. With the addition of some straight actors as stooges, this book could probably be edited into two, or three, very good half hour radio shows.

It is by far the moist amusing.

I have to admit that I did have tear in my ear listening to when he was being born in the same bed as his mother.

Star of Stage, BBC Radio and with a hit BBC T.V Series in his portfolio Count Arthur Strong is in my humble opinion the most refreshing and witty personalty to claim his niche in the British comedy scene. He is not in anyway a 'fly by night' he has trod the boards and honed his craft over many years. In the finest tradition of northern comics he effortlessly combines the captivating story telling ability of Al Read with the delightful wordplay of Les Dawson and throughout serves up a Dickensian banquet of Malapropisms.

Tries too hard to be funny - it isn't

Not seen the TV programme/ heard the radio show, but after reading the reviews thought it would raise a few chortles. Well in the nearly five hours I laughed, once. About sausages.

Enjoyed Toast on Toast, which is similar mock-autobiography, but this just tries too hard to be funny and isn’t. Getting names/ words muddled up might be funny a few times, but all the way through the book, it gets irritating.
