Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

Penguin presents the audiobook edition of Roald Dahl's classic The Witches, read by Miranda Richardson.

One child a week is 52 a year.

Squish them and squiggle them and make them disappear.

BEWARE.

There are witches everywhere. Witches could be a cashier in a supermarket, a woman driving a fancy car, or even your own teacher.

The only thing a witch cares about is squelching children. She hunts and squelches as many children as she possibly can. At least one a week.

The Grand High Witch hates children most of all and plans to make every single one of you disappear.

Only one boy and his grandmother can stop her. But if their plan fails, the Grand High Witch will frizzle them like fritters and then what will happen?

Soon to be a major motion picture starring Anne Hathaway, Octavia Spencer, Stanley Tucci and Chris Rock.

Really good to listen to

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would defiantly recommend this. its perfect to listen to on long journeys, and reminds you of your childhood with Dahl.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Witches?

When the cook chops off the end of the tail of the young boy who is now a mouse.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

when the boy told his grandma that he was happy that he wouldn't have a long life as a mouse because he didn't want to live without her.

Any additional comments?

If you want something to listen to that's nice and easy this is it. I would say that sometimes Miranda voice is hard to understand when she is the high grand witch but besides that its brilliant.

Wonderfully witchy

Really enjoyed listening to this. I love Roald Dahl's imagination along with his dark humour. The story is engaging and certainly entertains all the way through.
Miranda is so wonderful with her accents and rolling Rrrrrs.

Let down!

Love the story, but the narrator completely ruined it with the screeching voice for the Grand High Witch. So horrible, I couldn’t finish the book.
Bring back Simon Callow reading it!

First book I've returned

I love this story and the narrator does a mostly good job. However, as others have said, the chapters involving the grand high witch are pretty unbearable and there's spikes in the volume that make these parts an unpleasant listen.
There are also sound effects played throughout the narration. I found these to be clumsy, often poorly timed and just generally immersion breaking.
I could put up with either the grand high witch or the sfx, but both of them together means I wouldn't listen to this again, so I've returned it.

Nicely done bar one point

This is a qellvoiced and faithful retelling of the original story. the relationship and the love between grandmother and grandchild comes through well and all the voices are good....except for certain scenes with the Grand High Witch. Like several other reviewers here have already mentioned, when she is yelling and screaming her voice becomes unintelligible and annoying to an extent that you don't want to listen anymore. I a totally started skipping those parts. other than that, very good.

Grand High Witch

The narrator was all brilliant until she started reading the part of the Grand High Witch, gosh I couldn't hear a word she said, plus she just yelled and screamed non-stop, it was awful for the ears, what a waste of my money, very unpleasant experience.

Terrible grand high witch

Love this story we decided to listen to on a recent car journey. Had to turn it off in the end due to the incomprehensible shouting voice of the grand high witch.

Agreed, What is the Grand High Witch saying??

I read the reviews, and found it hard to believe a story read by Miranda Richardson could ever narrate so badly. A story I love, so choose to ignore, I listened to chapter 7 and then the Grand high witch screeched, and I thought the language had changed, What is she saying? The next chapter was no different, absolutely terrible, I can listen anymore, sorry Miranda the book has got to go back, I am soooo disappointed.

Perfect narration

Miranda Richardson does a stellar job of narrating this. A consumate actress and performer, she perfectly encapsulates each character - little boy, grandmother, Grand High Witch - in a way that breathes new life into a familiar story. The sound effects complemented the narrative perfectly, and I enjoyed the story as much as I ever had as a child. A deserved 5 star rating, all round.
