Summary
January 1973. Linda Cole’s husband walks out on her. She packs her three kids to move from Charleston to Newberry. The story revolves her attempt to raise two daughters and a son alone.
At the same time, she endures shock treatments, stints in mental hospitals, and bad men. Her daughters, Leslie and Beth, become pioneers of teen parenting. They party but guard their five-year-old brother, Cole.
When Linda becomes obsessed with husband-finding, she leaves her three kids to raise and fight each other. The town they live in compresses itself on them and their friends.
As they grow up, they realize only one constant to all four’s Tri-Polar lifestyle: change.
