Summary

Homeless, hunted, and desperate to escape a bitter storm, Keira takes refuge in an abandoned groundskeeper's cottage. Her new home is tucked away at the edge of a cemetery, surrounded on all sides by gravestones: Some recent, some hundreds of years old, all suffering from neglect.

And in the darkness, she can hear the unquiet dead whispering.

The cemetery is alive with faint, spectral shapes, led by a woman who died before her time...and Keira, the only person who can see her, has become her new target. Determined to help put the ghost to rest, Keira digs into the spirit's past life with the help of unlikely new friends, and discovers a history of deception, ill-fated love, and murder.

But the past is not as simple as it seems, and Keira's time is running out. Tangled in a dangerous web, she has to find a way to free the spirit...even if it means offering her own life in return.

bit different for D'Arcy coates

I was not to sure in the first few hours, but am glad I finished it, I wouldn't say its her best book but it's a good arounder with a strong ending, recommended

Meh, okay, not my fave

I love Darcy Coates, a good haunted house mystery is my favorite time killer.

I didn’t care for her last series, so I was excited for this one.
My biggest complaint is that it’s called “The Whispering Dead” but dead are mute and make no noise. Silly complaint, I know, but.. they don’t whisper!
Anydangway, I thoroughly enjoyed the conspiracy theory friend and pastor. I’ll probably get the next one as long as it isn’t too out of the realm of possibility (shut up, I know it’s a ghost story).

Awesome story

This book is awesome. The main character is multi faceted. I love the pastor and her conspiracy theorist friend. She’s funny. There’s lots of ghosts in this book and it’s NOT gory which is fine by me! Darcy Coats has always been one of my favorite authors. There’s Only one thing that bothered me and it’s that’s these people are in fact supposed to be Australian and the narrator is clearly American or Canadian?

ugh, not for me

The premise had potential but devolved into some kind of Scooby Doo cozy horror mystery.

always the best

it's a little slow because it's a prolog but it's well worth and nice seeing such character development

Couldn’t get into the story

I just felt like I was being set up for a series against my will. Coates is usually an excellent author, with superb horror crafting skills, so I was very disappointed to be presented with a lackluster hero who neutralized all scares with her dull persona. Coates tried too hard to make Keira interesting, to the point where Keira dominates the whole plot with her dime store detective novel backstory. I suppose it’s a failed attempt to create longevity and momentum for future installments. The horror elements effectively shriveled into obscurity in the glaring headlights of this overblown character. I had no desire to finish the book or read another installment of the Keira show. I will stick to Coates’ other books, which I hope there will be more of.

Great listen 🎶

Great first book. Darcy is a favorite of mine. Perfect performance Freeman! giving each character their own voice making this story come to life. On to the next book! I just got to hear what happens next!

It is the top 5 of books I have ever read and now I reread all the time. I found it by mistake and now I think everyone should read it!

Very engaging

I enjoyed this audiobook. I found the story very engaging. The pacing is pleasant, like a cozy English village. I liked spending time with characters and plan to spend more time. Narration can be tricky but this one was very good in inflection an intonation.

Good book

The book is great, it just happens the it stopped playing in Chapter 23 and will not let me finish the final 6 chapters, which is very disappointing, but so far this is the only book though Audible this has happened to
