Summary
The second book in the beloved and globally best-selling Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix. Welcome to Anthony's story....
1814 promises to be another eventful season, but not, This Author believes, for Anthony Bridgerton, London's most elusive bachelor, who has shown no indication that he plans to marry. And in all truth, why should he? When it comes to playing the consummate rake, nobody does it better....
Lady Whistledown's Society Papers, April 1814
Anthony Bridgerton needs a wife. Having spent his 20s in a rakish pursuit of pleasure (whilst taking care to ensure the financial security of his mother and seven younger siblings and mother) he knows it's high time he settled down and ensured the continuation of the Bridgerton line. Edwina Sheffield is considered the most beautiful debutante of the current season. She is also sweet, innocent and eminently biddable - Anthony is sure she'll make a perfectly acceptable wife and vows to make her his.
The only obstacle in his way is Edwina's older sister, Kate. Kate is determined to do all she can to allow her sister the chance to marry for love rather than convenience. And the roguish viscount is beginning to think he may have met his match in Kate's keen wit and sharp tongue. Until, that is, he makes the mistake of kissing her....
Critic reviews
"Captivating and alluring. Hilarious and yet incredibly heart-warming, this is a tale that will charm the most discriminating heart." (Romantic Times)
"A smart, funny touch." (Time Magazine)

Georgette Heyer this ain't
I don't get the 5star reviews. Plodding, dull, predictable, poorly written and sex scenes which added nothing. The narration was irritating and I hated the narrator's interpretation particularly of the male characters. I love to curl up with a Georgette Heyer on a winter evening, for a little Recency romance, and there are some great Audible versions as well , but Julia Quinn is nowhere near as witty or as deft an author as Heyer although I suspect that that's what she wanted only racier. But to use one of her more jarring phrases it felt like she just "fell on her "bum".

Please get a different narrator!
I have read one of these before and enjoyed it for what it is. I was really disappointed with the audio book version. The narrator is absolutely awful. I'll stick to kindle versions in future

meh, boring and predictable with lots of mistakes
I listened to this because of the reviews of the TV series that I can't watch due to subscription streaming. I can only hope it's better and more accurate than the book!
once the hero says he hates a girl you know the really loves her, the same with the heroine. the rest is just waiting for the inevitable.
for a character that is afraid of storms that make a big part of the plot, you'd have thought the author would research and get the details factually corrrct? I wasn't aware thunder came before lightening...??!!!!
flowery and fancy writing attempting - and failing - to be in the style of Jane Austin. narrator was SO annoying with the nasal false cut glass accent.
graphic like a kills and boon were at least a pleasant distraction 😆

Brilliant and Witty
Rosalyn Landor is one of my favourite narrators.
She is brilliant in bringing the characters to life.
You know when it's a good book when you don't want it to end.

My favorite among the Bridgertons
Let us not kid ourselves we are not reading The Bridgetons in the search of the most impecable piece of literature. Nevertheless these series have the best recipe for a nice comfy holiday read.
"The Viscount who loved me" is my favorite. It is sweet, funny, romantic and angsty. But mostly is feels the most bubbly from all of novels of the series I had the chance to read. If they will decide to turn this novel into a second season of The Bridgetons adaptation I will be incredibly happy.

Funny and a good listen
Having watched the first season if the Netflix Bridgerton (and having listened to book 4), I purchased this one, book 2. I listened to the whole book in two sittings, and enjoyed it thoroughly. It made me laugh aloud in places too.
I recommend it if you like the genre.

Narrated poorly
The second story is in many respects similar to the first in plot. Bit disappointed as I thought it might be a little different. Nevertheless I still listened to all of it. It is narrated very poorly. The narrator impersonates the male voices and frankly it’s laughable and not in a good way!! All this said I’m still going to listen to the third story!!

So disappointing, Unevenful & predictable bodice ripper. This is not Jane Austen, do yourself a favour and read Pride & Prejudice

Eye rolling read
I couldn’t stop rolling my eyes at the story, it is so predictable and so cringe-worthy at times, but I still had to finish it! The narration was irritating too, especially the male voices, but will I listen to another, probably!

Sigh worthy
I thought it would be difficult to top the first book in the Bridgerton series, Daphne and Simon's story, but Julia Quinn managed to do it. This is Anthony's story and what a wonderful one it is. He finally decides he needs to marry, but the woman he sets his sights on won't give him the time of day unless her sister gives her blessing. With his reputation and past that is the last thing that her sister will allow. In his quest to get her to change her mind will Anthony realise that perhaps he has chosen the wrong sister to want to marry?
Once again this is a wonderful, enchanting story that is brought to life by the perfect narration of Rosalyn Landor! Normally I prefer male narrators especially when it comes to the intimate scenes because a woman voicing the man's part never seems to be anything but cringeworthy. BUT not so with Rosalyn, her male voices are great and at times I could forget that it was actually only one person voicing both the male and the females. Julia Quinn picked the perfect person to perform these books for her. A great partnership.

Not great not terrible
It wasn't a bad book, but in the end I was quite bored. Kate seemed a little bit too weepy at times.

Not bad for source material
Not bad, not great either. Kate essentially goes from tiger to scared and docile kitten in the book as soon as she is with Anthony. I much prefer her in the series as she is a much stronger and more forceful character. Also Anthony is outright trying to bully and intimidate her in the early parts of the book and I find that to be off-putting. In the series he is an arrogant type early on to be sure but not trying to outright scare anyone into submission. I think it is decent for source material for the series but not nearly as good as the updated series material.

Long since I’ve finished a book this quick
I really enjoy the Bridgerton series and look forward to the next book already. Surprisingly I favored the first book, as Anthony is a bit annoying. I really do like him much better after learning more about him. Their chemistry was really good and I’m happy with the book. I will recommend it.

The Viscount Who Loved Me - Delightful!!
As was the case with the first Book in the Bridgerton series The Duke and I, I liked and enjoyed the Netflix version, but I simply ADORED the audio book. So much more to a story when you get to know and fall in love with the characters through their inner thoughts and feelings.
The book is also quite a bit different from the movie, but in a better way.
Another thing is that with brilliant narration by Rosalyn Landor, I enjoyed it tremendously.
This was an awesome story by the awesome Julia Quinn. Another winner for sure!
Highly recommended. Get it today, you won’t be sorry.

Way better than the Netflix version
This is such a fun book. Fun but with great character development.
Plus, this is way better than the Netflix adaptation because the book is really focused on the couple and without any distracting side stories.

Great story with more than one or two giggles
I enjoy the period dramas but there were also many clever little interactions that had me trying not to laugh out loud…. Not a good look with headphones on in a crowd😅 but thoroughly enjoyable
