Summary

Love is in the air?

Luca is used to being the ‘single one’ at weddings - it happens, when all your other friends are engaged, married or taken. But when she bumps into Tom, her friend from university who broke her heart into a million pieces, she finds herself wondering what could have been.

It’s 10 years later, surely she should be over that Tom by now? So why is he looking even more gorgeous than ever - and why doesn’t he seem to be able to keep his eyes off her either?

And as the champagne flows and old secrets resurface, Luca realises that perhaps the time to take a chance on love and life is...now?

Avoid

Quite possibly the worst read book I have even heard! It could have been a great, easy listen if Karen Cass had been narrating as she has for all of the Portia MacIntosh’s books that I have listened to before . This narrator was dreadful, made the story boring and performed the most shocking accents I have ever heard.

One to avoid

I normally enjoy Portia’s books as light distraction, with no brain engagement required, but this one is quite awful. It’s like it’s been written by someone who hates women. The main woman is quite a pathetic character (not helped by the babyish wispy voice given to her by the narrator), she has really no redeeming qualities, she has one female friend and slags off all of the other women throughout the book. The other women are written in quite a hateful way or are just lacking any actual personality (Fiona). The male characters aren’t much better but at least they have a semblance of a back story. Nothing much happens in the story itself.
The accents have been mentioned in other reviews and they are laughably bad, Fiona’s welsh accent being the most painful to listen to closely followed by the man from Glasgow.
I wanted to like it but it was so bad!

Skip this one

I normally love Portia MacIntosh's books but I couldn't believe this was by the same author. An absolute bore and a chore to get through. Do yourself a favour and skip this one. The narrator is also one of the worst I've ever heard.

AWFUL NARRATION but good story

I love PORTIA MACINTOSH books and now I have listened to all of them up to date 4th Aug 2022.

The story was good but the narration and accents by Rachael Beresford were awful and that really does take away from the actual novel.

I am happy to know that all other books by Portia are narrated by the brilliant Karen Cass.

Karen Cass seems to bring the story and characters to life with so much joy and hilarity.

bait and switch

Thought it was a comedy but a few chapters in... attempted rape. So, no thanks.

Narrator ruins it

I’m going to have to give this one up!

I’ve listened to all the Portia Macintosh books and always found them sharp, witty and with interesting characters.

The main character in this one is depressing, prim and totally unlikeable. All of her friends seem unlikeable. It’s depressing and old fashioned and very prim and proper.

However, nothing is worse than the narration. Quite simply the worst I’ve heard. Makes the main character sounds depressed, sullen and cold as for the accents….almost worth listening to for a laugh. Welsh and Scottish awful but the scouse was unidentifiable.

Makes me not want to read any more of her books which is really disappointing.

Whispering Narrator

The story was good but the narrator was just awful. Some of the worst accents I've ever heard the Scouser the Glaswegian and the Welsh were barely distinguishable. They all sounded the same. I don't understand why they pick narrators that really can't do accents. And when she spoke as the main character she did this breathy whispering voice which was just so annoying really detracted from the story.

Couldn’t Finish due to the awful narrator

I can imagine the story was great as I’ve enjoyed all of Portia MacIntosh’s books. Unfortunately, I could not go any further than chapter 8 because the narrators voice grated so badly and the accents were appalling. I’ve decided just to read the book myself before the narrator ruined it any more !

Disjoined

The narrator was a little disappointing and the story was disjointed and hard to follow. Naming the chapters “now” should have been “present day” as when narrating this is confusing.

Awful narration

The story was very good and I usually really like Portia Macintosh’s books, but the narration was truly awful. Ruined the book for me

Narrator killed the story, droll, almost monotone.

Have love most prior books by this author. Five chapters in and I can't handle the narration anymore. Lifeless, depressing, monotone made me tune out and/or snooze. I tried, I can't. Too bad, good author. Probably was a good book. would like a refund but dont see where that is an option anymore.

Enjoyable story, didn’t enjoy the narrator

I enjoyed how this story played out, but I didn’t love the narrator. Her pitch choices for some of the characters did not seem to be accurate for the character. Example would be Clarky, who came off sounding like a girl. And the Welsh accent for Fiona, did not sound at all like a Welsh accent at all. Still, the story was enjoyable.

Just ok…

I love this author but this one is not her best. Missing the magic of the other novels I’ve read. Too many characters not well developed and story gets convoluted with flashbacks and internal monologues by the protagonist. I was ready for it to end halfway through and that’s very unusual for me. Glad I bought at a discount rate I doubt I’ll listen again. Narrator is ok. Different than the other books as well more childish tone and range of voices is limited. I highly recommend author’s other novels instead like the Plus One Pact and Stuck on You for a more traditional and charming British Rom Com experience.

The narrator was not right for the novel.

I had a hard time getting through the book because of the slow and boring tone on the narrator. It was a good story- which was almost ruined by the narrator. Glad the author chose a different narrator for her other books.

Not a favorite

Read a lot of her newer books all of which I loved. This one is slow, tedious and I’m just not drawn into it. The narration was too slow and monotone. Otherwise Portia is one of my favorite authors!

Awful narrator

She seems to be very bored and disinterested in the book- sad? It’s bad. I can’t pay attention to the book. The narrator sounds like she’s about to off herself with depression.

cute but convoluted

I liked the characters. There was some depth to them. The narration was really well done. It wasn't your typical ending.

Least favorite

I have enjoyed every other book written by this author. This book was boring and hard to finish.
