Best Book I’ve EVER Listened to… BY FAR!
I’ve listened to countless audiobooks over the last decade or so, and when my dear old dad - he’s across the pond on the plateau of a mountain somewhere in Colorado but, once a month, we share our favourite reads and TV programmes - told me that Richard Osman had written a murder mystery, I was on my Audible app quicker than diving into the freezer when someone tells me there’s ice cream in there. I mean, what could be better than watching Alexander Armstrong and marvelling at the quick-witted intelligence of Richard Osman? I think my dad may be watching back episodes of Pointless as I write - strangely, he’d never seen nor even heard of it before our conversation.
And that was only two months ago.
Of course, I immediately bought ‘The Thursday Murder Club’ and was enthralled right from the start. So you can only imagine how thrilled I was to find that ‘The Man Who Died Twice’ was quite literally available in the app the very same day I’d listened to Lesley Manville’s lovely voice finishing the story! No Spoilers – it wasn’t easy, but aren’t you impressed at my restraint? Finishing the one and seamlessly finding the next in my library like that... Well, it was like eating a whole tub of Ben & Jerry’s ‘Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough’ then realising there was another tub of Kelly’s ‘Cornish with a Crunch’ hiding underneath the Sainsbury’s mixed veg in the drawer beneath.
I must caution you, though - especially if you’re one of those people of a certain age if you know what I mean, and a tangential thinker - if you’re not, I should give Joyce a wide berth, but Elizabeth will be right up your tidy-minded street. Amazingly good fun, brilliantly plotted, humorous and empathetic as these books are, I think they should come with a health warning, something like ‘may contain ingredients that will seriously affect your ability to resist future books’, I think. But then, so should Richard Osman, really, and Alexander Armstrong… oh, and Lesley Manville, too! What do you think?

Words for the sake of word count
I heard about this on bbc radio 2 but it’s awful, it jumps from third person to 1st person POV you miraculously know what others are thinking yet it’s written in 3rd person and Chris is referred to as she and he a couple of times.
That confusion aside the story takes you down some pointless paths, and utter boring paths at that describing a mundane shopping trip or someone’s holiday which adds nothing to the plot or character building. It would be like me telling you about a trip to Skegness as part of this review when it clearly has nothing to do with reviewing the book and it’s not going to help you in slightest to decide to read it or not but it fills the pages and the word count and leaves your screaming at the audio telling them to “get on with it” countless times.
The characters are not built up or described well at all you listen to Donna for hours then half way through the book it drops in another feature about her which you’d expect at the start, there no point introducing and describing someone half way through when the reader has already built up who she is!
The actual story content in the book is about 5 pages long, it would nicely fit into a 500 words story but it’s miraculously been filled out with utter garbage to make it into a 300page saga of verbal diarrhoea
How do books like this get into the charts?
I only finished it because I wasted a credit on it and didn’t have another free one until next month but it honestly has to be the worst book I have ever read / listened to and I have read some crap I can tell you!
If you struggle sleeping it might help you drift off I guess.

A story about old age more than a murder mystery
Lovely story - profound and good fun in equal measure, and a good follow up from the first. The characters are fun and likeable, and the moments covering old age, loneliness, loss, and love were possibly the best bits. However, the murder mystery itself has too many plot holes and is too implausible (even when being generous) to really be considered a classic whodunnit… and the characters’ delight in looking at dead bodies felt out of place given the other themes throughout. By no means is this meant to sound harsh: it’s an enjoyable story and good fun in these tough times… just don’t come looking for a Christie.

Even better than the first
I enjoyed the first book, but i LOVED this one. Maybe because we’ve already established the main characters and the setting or because the story itself is somehow more enthralling. I dont know really, i just felt it had so much more depth to it. Fantastic book!

Great story, but the Best bit is Lesley Manville’s narration. Masterful. It’s clear who’s talking, but no stupid accents.

Such a disappointment
After reading his first book, I was thrilled with it. The characters and the way they interact just reminded me so much of how my Mum and her friends in her Home were.
But this book is totally different, featuring MI6, New York Mafia, Columbian drug barons and murky, unbelievable pasts.
I struggled on with it, hoping it would improve. but alas, it just got worse.
Once I can find out how to return it I will.

Great sequel
Really loved this book. The characters are so well developed and their personalities really come through. Joyce is a delight, she really makes me laugh. A good mystery with twists and turns but light and easy to listen to. Lesley Manville does a wonderful job.

Outstanding... again!
Osman's first 'Thursday Murder Club' novel is a fine gem of a book. This (his second) is even better. More rounded and engaging characters, even better story line and Lesley Manville's narration is quite superb. This is a book that comes along, sweeps you up in its warm embrace and simply carries you away. Highly recommended.

Another gentle and lovely linguee
All I can say is, Mr Osman must have a lovely soul to write such gentle prose. And, to boot, we have a textured, multi-layered plot.

Great narration / poor story
From very early on this felt tired and derivative. If you want a far better version of the same type of story, I would recommend Mick Herron's writing. I persevered to the end but I'm not really sure why- most probably because the narration was entertaining.

Enid Blyton for adults
I love a good mystery, especially when solved by a charming group of characters I can really invest in. Beautifully written, masterfully narrated, completely entertaining and I can't wait for the next one!

"That's what mates do."
Ibrahim decides to throw caution to the wind and start living life to the full; so after a very pleasant three hour visit to a book shop, returning to his car he is struck down and kicked by an hooded youth on a bicycle stealing his mobile phone. His friends from the Thursday Murder Club, Ron, Joyce and Elizabeth, together with Chris and Donna from the local police, are determined to see justice done. An ex husband of Elizabeth is also in trouble and asks for her help and Joyce decides she wants a dog. It's going to be an exciting few days for the four not-so-young friends.
Endearing, exciting and totally foolish, leaving a few dead bodies along the way, this is a fun, entangled mystery amusingly written by Richard Osman and beautifully read by Lesley Manville (once the playback speed is increased to 1.3). A bonus interview between author and narrator follows the story.
Recommended to anyone looking for a gently light hearted crime story.

Wow! You simply HAVE to listen!
Not exactly a sequel to ‘Thursday Murder Club’ but more a continuation of characters. The writing is absolutely sublime, and when you combine this with Lesley Manville’s narration you have perfection. Richard Osman writes for his characters with true depth of feeling so that they really have gravitas within the story threads. Lesley Manville gives life to them with her voice, and her expression of the characters fits hand in glove with the author. This is a pairing made in Audiobook heaven!!!
The plot line has many twists and turns and I love the unexpected and clandestine antics of a group of lovable pensioners. Bring on the next book please!!!!!!

Another winner from Richard Osman!
Just as good as the first in the series and well deserving of repeated listens. Beautifully drawn characters, wonderfully narrated and at times tense, touching and very funny. Can’t wait for the third novel.
