Summary

Following The Black Elfstone and The Skaar Invasion comes the third book in the triumphant four-part conclusion to the Shannara series, from one of the all-time masters of fantasy. The Skaar have arrived in the Four Lands, determined to stop at nothing less than all-out conquest. They badly need a new home, but peaceful coexistence is not a concept they understand.

An advance force under the command of princess Ajin has already established a foothold, but now the full Skaar army is on the march - and woe betide any who stands in its way. But perhaps the Skaar victory is not a foregone conclusion. The Druid Drisker Arc has freed both himself and Paranor from exile. Drisker's student, Tarsha Kaynin, has been reunited with the chief defender of the Druid order and is learning to control her powerful Wishsong magic.

If they can only survive Tarsha's brother and the Druid who betrayed Drisker Arc, they might stand a chance of defeating the Skaar. But that is a very big if...as Tarsha's brother now carries the Stiehl - one of the most powerful weapons in all the Four Lands - and is determined to take his revenge on everyone who has wronged him.

A Little Disappointing

Three times shall you die, but each death shall see you rise anew.

I have enjoyed this series, so far, with one caveat. Drisker Arc. He is meant to be the Ard Rhys; the Druid who is meant to be perceptive, sharp, inventive, knowledgeable; all of that. Yet the figure painted in these books is of an elderly man, slow witted, dull, unobservant. Each time he faces Clizia Porse, he seems unable to forsee her cunning, to anticipate. And the listener is expected to believe he will be instrumental in saving the world!

Grumble over, apart from my frustration with one or two of the characters, I still found myself enjoying this book. However, the author has ended on a knife edge with no Book 4 in sight on Audible, which adds to the frustration.

very enjoyable

This is the third volume in the Fall of Shannara and there's definitely been no relaxation in the standard of either the story or the narrator. In my opinion the best from Terry Brooks in a while . Simon Vance narrates beautifully, as ever, really bringing the characters to life. I'm really looking forward to the grand finale.

Typical Brooks Shannara Let Down By Bad Decisions

Overall I enjoyed the book, which is no different to any other Brooks material: simple, easy to read and uncomplicated. However the reason I give it only 3 stars is the frustrating and downright irritating decision by the author to put his characters into situation they shouldn't be in, and how supposed wise and powerful Druids keep falling for the obvious traps and refuse to do anything without the slightest forethought or preparation, particularly the finale (no spoilers!) which drove me to anger. They are so stupid that I half expected there to be a counter-twist but there never is, which I guess is indicative of Brooks' unsophisticated writing style.

What A Dissapointment!

Unbelievable characterisation and poor story line, same old rehashed story with predictable outcomes, if i had to sum this up it would be reduce, reuse and recycle. Poorly thought out and dissapointing ending. Didn't like the narrator or his pronouncement of some of the names, I don't think I'll even bother with the last book. I can't reconcile myself with Brooks' description of the four lands and the way it was depicted on the awful TV series, maybe that's influencing my decision.

Another great book but .......

A good story and easy to follow but not enough happening and too many loose ends. Disappointed with the ending too. Another long wait for the next instalment
