Summary
Because love bleeds into the darkest hearts
From New York Times best-selling author, Melanie Moreland comes the final installment of edge-of-your-seat romance series.
Egan Vulpe
Trained explosives expert. Gun for hire. Loner.
Until the day he falls in love.
He leaves the dangerous world he knows behind. He paints, owns a gym, and co-runs Elite Security. In the past, he has worked with his friends at Hidden Justice, always staying behind the scenes. But not far enough behind.
When the woman he loves is taken, his only recourse is to step back into a world of crime—this time on the wrong side of the law. He knows he has only one choice.
Save her. Or die trying.

Romanian John Lane is everything!
So we’ve come to the end of the Men of Hidden Justice series and somehow Ms Moreland still manages to make this last book just as entertaining and gripping as the first. We finally get our Romanian Romeo, Egan’s, story with the woman of his dreams - independent, stubborn Doctor, Sofia. We first learnt about Egan’s infatuation with Sofia in the last book in the series (The Watcher) - while Sofia has been in the series almost from the start. Do you have to have read the previous books in the series to enjoy and understand this one? Probably not, but I really would suggest you read at least The Watcher before this one to fully appreciate the underlying story. Hell, just go ahead and read the whole series - you won’t be disappointed.
From the first I was giddy clapping at this pairing. Egan is, what Ms Moreland calls, an alpha-mellow also known as an alpha-roll. Basically a mixture between an alpha hero and a cinnamon roll hero. He’s super sweet, kind, loving, warm and supportive - while also being 100% alpha caveman and gone for his woman. And that is exactly what we get with Romanian born Egan. He’s been patiently waiting for Sofia to realise they’re perfect for each other and when it’s on - it’s on! Le sigh.
I’m not sure I could cope, at this stage, if anyone other than John Lane narrated a Melanie Moreland book. I do admit to being slightly apprehensive with how an accent would come across - Egan being Romanian although living in Canada for now the majority of his life. I needn’t have worried and if you’ve swooned over John Lane’s normal voice - wait until you here him with an accented lilt. Egan has always been described as someone with just a touch of an accent and that’s exactly what we get. It’s there - but it’s not full-on, cringe at the parody type of thing. And extra clapping for his seamless swapping between accent and none when Egan is talking to a native speaker.
Sofia is the perfect partner for Egan - and it’s not just because Egan says she is. She’s the type of strong woman character that I love to read about in that she’s quietly fierce and independent rather than being off-puttingly ballsy. She’s got high walls - understandably so - and I really understood and resonated with her. Much like with John Lane, Maxine Mitchell is the only person I want narrating a Melanie Moreland heroine. She’s got a smokey tone to her voice that’s equal parts vulnerable and fierce. She, too, did a great job of her own character, Sofia, as well as when she had to deepen her timbre and add an accent when Egan was speaking. Perfection as always.
Together, Sofia and Egan are adorable. But also hotter than Hades. They connect as friends and soulmates - and as lovers, too. This is a Melanie Moreland book so of course we’re getting the fun and frisky shenanigans between our couple. And due to their established relationship from the start of the book, we get there nice and early. I have noticed that Ms Moreland is adding more and more bum stuff in her novels of late. Not full-on but I’m not a fan. Great if you’re into it but there’s plenty without it so I’m not too grumpy.
This is an Hidden Justice (HJ) book so of course we’ve got an element of suspense interwoven with our romance. Our baddie is sinister and threatening but not so scary that it freaked out a wimp like me. But there was enough tension to make the story interesting and give us the peril we need before the payoff of our lovely HEA. And epilogue. Yay! And a further epilogue for all the couples from the Men of HJ series. Quintuple yays!
I have really enjoyed the Men of Hidden Justice series and while I’m sorry to see it come to an end, I’d rather it end on this lovely high than keep going and lose some of its magic. Melanie Moreland masterfully manages to weave romance and intrigue in a way that never fails to capture my attention and tug at my heart strings. And our wonderful narraters bring the story to life with emotion and excitement you can only get from an audiobook. There’s a reason why Ms Moreland is one of my favourite authors and this audiobook shows it to perfection. Definitely 5 stars.

Amazing final story
John Lane is amazing as Egan Vulpe. Hearing him say Egan's pet name for Sophia was great. To know how it should sound & not just how I thought it should sound. It just made me swoon. John & Maxine are fabulous narrators, sos skilled and talented.
Egan is The Specialist. Hidden Justice's demolishion expert. He's been there for all of the HJ men when they needed him.
He loved Sophia from a far since they met. Sophia's past has made her wary & scared to love. Egan's love, determination & confidence that Sophia is his sole mate win Sophia's heart. In love, they start building a life together, planning for their future until a stranger intent on luring Egan back into the darker side of a previous life endangers it all.
Now the HJ men are there for Egan to secure his HEA.
I enjoyed Sophia's tenacity and strength, then Egan with the dichotomy of what he was and what he is, the overarching knowledge that Sophia would accept his love.

Egan & Sofia
Great suspenseful, romantic story. The characters were strong, but showed their softer side too. I love how the past characters are interwoven in eachother's stories. I liked how the narration brings these characters to life.

Amazing series!
Egan and Sophia's story was the perfect way to end the Men of Hidden Justice series, it simply had great and strong characters, and they matched in a very deep and emotional way with each other. Their story wasn't easy, Sophia's walls were as up as they could go, and Egan never gave up. I was very intrigued by Egan, so quiet yet his story was fantastic. I'm going to miss them all. The audiobook narrated by Maxin Mitchell and John Lane was very well done, it had good pacing and their voices matched the characters. I suggest you hear the audiobook for a very different experience.

Amazing!!
After loving this whole series, I had no doubt that the final entry and Egan's story would be amazing, and it absolutely was. To start, I have to say that Egan is such an incredible character. Swoon worthy is simply too lame and does not even begin to do him justice. Trust me when I tell you that this guy is going to make you fall and fall hard. Sophia to is a wonderful character. She is smart, capable and has a bit of emotional baggage that makes her very easy to feel for. Together they make a couple that is simply everything. Sweet, funny, poignant and hot, these two are the pinnacle of #couplegoals. Backed by an engaging storyline that is filled with danger, suspense, action and twists, you just really can't go wrong with this book and in fact, this whole series. I thoroughly enjoyed the dual narration and felt both narrators fit the characters very well and gave outstanding performances.

EPIC audiobook!!!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 5 STARS
WOW!!! Like… OH MY STARS… I'll give them all!!! John Lane and Maxine Mitchell are my favourite narrating duo! They delivered the most amazing audiobook—as they always do for Melanie Moreland. All I can say that this audiobook was downright EAR-GASMIC!!! I loved each and every one of the Men of Hidden Justice, but Egan Vulpe has surpassed them all!!! This man is EVERYTHING you want in a man. He stole my heart like he stole Sophia's—no that's a lie, I undoubtedly handed it over on a silver platter. This man is absolutely swoon-worthy! Trust me when I say you'll want to get your hands on Sophia and Egan's story, you'll drown in every single word. The Specialist by Melanie Moreland is an EPIC audiobook that will join the ranks of the BIBLIO-ARISTOCRACY!!!

A great book on audio!
The Specialist is the final book in the Men of Hidden Justice series which has been one of my favorites from Melanie Moreland.
After getting to see him throughout the series I was excited to get Egan's story. He and Sofia's relationship development from friends to more was really well done. It is one of my favorite tropes and they had great chemistry and the friendship they shared made their connection strong from the beginning.
I really like Melanie's writing, it's engaging and always hooks me from the beginning. She always has great audiobooks with well cast narrators who really embody the characters and story well. I cannot recommend this series and book enough! It has interesting characters, action, suspense, and no shortage of romance.

5 He Can Let His Guard Down Stars!!
Since I wrote my review for the e-book I've had the pleasure of listening to the audiobook and John Lane and Maxine Mitchell totally bring it with their narration. As intense as the e-book was, having it brought to life by these two was phenomenal! I could feel every single moment and action in my heart. What I especially appreciated though, was their accent when in character as Egan. My great grandmother was from Romania and I remember her intonations and heavy accent and both John and Maxine were spot on!! And Romanian is not easy language so kudos not only to them but to Ms. Moreland for finding the right narrators for this crucial piece of the audiobook.
It’s hard for me to imagine that we’re at the end of the Hidden Justice world. With this series, Melanie Moreland gave me both Heroes and Heroines that I absolutely fell in love with. And with each book, the suspense was just as intense as the book before but in different ways.
With this book Sofia, a constant throughout the previous books, finally gets her story with Egan Vulpe. The enigmatic, silent man that was the expert in blowing things up for Hidden Justice. Things have changed in that HJ really isn’t there anymore, but it appears, that there’s some that aren’t happy about that or at least that Egan doesn’t want to be the “expert” anymore.
The connection between these two is soul-deep. I loved his patience and assurance that Sofia was going to be his and he would do whatever it took to make that happen. This woman, she’s so bright, intelligent, beautiful and caring, but doesn’t really think she can find the love that she’s seen develop all around her. But Egan will change her mind!
As I read this book, the closer I got to the suspense element, I was tense and waiting for the proverbial “shoe to drop” and boy did it ever!! Ms. Moreland didn’t hold back in this book and I was on tenterhooks when everything went down. My heart was in my throat especially when I could truly feel Egan’s anger and fear for the love of his life. Without giving too much away, the men that are HJ play a role in this book and as you can imagine they are a force when they’re all together.
As sad as I am that we’re leaving this world, Ms. Moreland absolutely left me with a smile on my face. I got everything I hoped for when I turned the very last page. If you haven’t read these books you’re truly missing out!

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭, the fifth and final book in the Men of Hidden Justice series by Melanie Moreland is Egan and Sophia's story.
Egan has loved Sophia since the moment he laid eyes on her but she has always kept him in the friend zone. After an incident at the hospital Sophia works, she admits to Egan her feelings. Happiness only lasts for so long when Egan's past catches up to him.
I enjoyed Egan and Sophia's story and their journey to their happily ever after. I found this book to be a little slower and less suspenseful than the other Men of Hidden Justice books. I did love the final glimpse at the end that gave an update into everyone's lives and wrapped up the series.
John Lane and Maxine Mitchell did another amazing job with this book and were the perfect voices for this series.

Egan and Sophia - Swoon!
Yep! Melanie Moreland saved the best for last. Don't get me wrong, I've loved every couple in The Men of Hidden Justice series, but Egan Vulpe... Wow. Yeah, wow just about covers it. Egan and Sophia are a case of when you know, you know, especially for Egan. And he is relentless in his pursuit of Sophia. The only question I have is how she held out as long as she did. I understood her reasons, but Egan is totally swoon-worthy, from the things he says to how he prioritizes her happiness. Of course, it wouldn't be a Hidden Justice book without some danger and intrigue, and it's everything I expect from Melanie Moreland. This is the final book in the series, and we get a little catch-up with the rest of the found family that makes up The Men of Hidden Justice. This has been a terrific series of the kind of love we all wish for mixed with heart-pounding suspense. It's a series of characters I'll be coming back to visit time and time again.
I had the pleasure of reading and listening to The Specialist, and once again, John Lane and Maxine Mitchell deliver excellent performances. They've voiced all five books in the series, and I can't imagine these characters being left to anyone else.
What it comes down to is this: The Men of Hidden Justice series is a must read/must listen series from start to finish. Whatever your medium of choice, you can't go wrong with these guys and the women they fall for.
