Summary

The fire that was to change so many lives started with a single shaft of lightning. It struck on a still and moonless night and cocooned for a while in the heart of an ancient pine. The woman camped nearby with her group of troubled teenagers slept on, hearing nothing. But one among them would be lost forever. For soon the pupa of fire would hatch and engulf the entire mountain. Into this inferno will come the Smoke Jumper. His name is Connor Ford, and he braves the flames to save the woman he loves but knows he cannot have.

Epic story

After a heart-stopping first chapter the book slows its pace and gradually builds up a picture of the main characters and their lives. There's perhaps a little too much about smoke-jumping in the middle of the book, but after that the story takes off and one feels by the end that one has been witness to an epic story.

What a ride...

Well, I am glad that I ignored the dull blurb that accompanied this audio book, and took a chance on it because I have enjoyed other books by Nicholas Evans. It sounded like a bland, uninspired romance. It couldn't have been further from it. I usually enjoy Evans transporting me to beautiful Montana, but in this novel he took me across the globe too, and I loved it.

Great Story. Narrators female voices grated on me.

Im not a fan of the narrators voices for the women in the story. Made Julia sound feeble minded. So I nearly didn't get into it, luckily the story was good & kept pulling me back in.

A well written, original and authentic story.

I was very gripped by this story though it felt as if it were 2 books linked I to one.
Connor and Julia were so 'wonderful' they felt rather unbelievable. It has lots of really fascinating details about Africa and the smoke jumpers.
