Summary
She glanced down at the drawer in which she kept all her floppy disks. That and all the other drawers had been pulled out and thrown on the floor. They were empty, of course; along with the disks, all her notebooks and photographs were missing. Her last connections with the seventh scroll were lost. After three years of work, gone was the proof it had ever existed.
A hunt for treasure. A battle to stay alive.
When Royan Al Simma is the victim of a vicious attack that leaves her husband dead, her only thought is that she must continue their joint work: to use the secrets of the seventh scroll to find the hidden tomb of Pharaoh Mamose and its untold trove of lost Egyptian riches. Swashbuckling Indiana Jones Treasure Hunt
As an avid Wilbur fan, I first read the book when it was published and was not impressed with it at all. I found it very disjointed and felt that the treasure hunt based on the turmoil of Ethiopia's civil war didn't make any sense to me. Now, I have returned to the Seventh Scroll after enjoying the entire Ancient Egypt saga and the second time it made a lot more sense. The Ancient Egypt series is some of Wilbur's finest work and one of the greatest stories ever written. I adore Taita -along with Sean Courtney and Centaine but Taita is by far my favourite because he was a slave and could never have the woman he loved. I found Royan very annoying and was surprised by Nicolas' patience with her. Incredible action thriller although some of the unravelling of Taita's puzzle as part of the treasure hunt was very tedious. While I am accustomed to the cruelty in Wilbur's books, I did find the torture of a woman a bit unpalatable simply because the victim was someone I liked so much. Great book.

Outdated Sexism
The story itself was good, but no need in this day and age for the sexism. Its outdated. The voice adopted for Nicolas Q Harper was appalling. Sounded like Terry Thomas.

Just one chapter
I feel it would be easier to read if it had chapter breaks instead of it being read in one big block. Otherwise enjoyed the contents and the way the modern elements were worked in to the previous book.

Average adventure thriller
Almost struggled to get through this. Wilbur Smith's first Egypt book, River God, was excellent, this loosely linked follow-up, a modern day based story of a couple searching around Ethiopia for a tomb is not on the same level. The lead male and female characters are fairly dull being too nice and perfect through most of the story, the male lead seems to be expert in whatever tasks arise, and generally a bit smug. The dialogue between the characters is often pretty corny as well. Found the story improved somewhat in the second half when the villain fully comes into the story. Decidely average Wilbur Smith though - have read various other novels by the author that are better than this.
The narration was very good, good voice characterisation, did take a couple of chapters to get used to, but think that's normal when changing books, but fine after a short time listening.

Too long a chapter scrolling difficult
I have read this hardback book several times and it was good to get in on audible and to listen to it in sequence of the 4 books in book 1, 2, 3 4 in order. . Mark meadows does the story justice and he keeps an even pace throughout . I liked his voice variation with some good voices in character. I enjoyed listening to it. My only complaint is that the main recording is in one big chapter. This was problematic when transferring devices eg phone watch iPad. To pick up where it had left off on,other devices which meant searching through the time sequence to get to where I had left the story. It would have been much better if the chapters were broken down as the written word . Wilbur smith 4 books are all 20 plus hours having to trawl through hours listening detracts from the experience to get back into the story. Library chapters would be a better recording. I already own the QUEST( book 4) on audible which was done some time ago it has separate chapter and is much better. Come on audible do a better recording

Far better than book 1
I have to admit, after having struggled through book 1 River God. I seriously considered abandoning the series. That's how much I'd disliked not so much the story but the characters in book 1. However, I'm glad I persevered and read book 2. The characters were far more affable, if not exactly likeable and definitely more relatable.

Great read
Excellent narrator. With all the different characters coming to life with his masterful accents, it was quite easy to believe different actors were speaking. Truly wonderful story telling.

Narrator was awful
I really wanted to listen to this book as the story looked like a good adventure. However the narrator is dreadful, every line is delivered to a pattern that repeats over and over with his voice rising on every fourth word or so. He made the action sequences sound like a shopping list read by an air steward giving out safety advice

Found it hard to stop listening
I read the book years ago and at that time I considered it the best book I had ever read. Now, with audible it was so much better that I am re-looking at all of the other Wilbur Smith books again.

Delightful, but Very Different
I have to admit that I don't like being taken out of time and place from a previous story. I just don't... It was jarring and annoying, but the story is rather grand, a bit dragged out, and poignant. I still loved it, and am looking forward to more of Taita's adventures and genius in the next book. I don't give spoilers. I love it, but it is different.

I Fell In Love With The Characters
If you haven’t read Wilbur Smith YOU NEED TO! I am so sad because I have now finished all of his series along with all but one of his novels. I’m saving that for an up coming road trip with my husband.
Mr. Smiths writing style is so very extraordinary, vivid, alive, I feel like I am a character in one of his stories his novels are so easy to melt into. I feel as though I can, smell the air, taste the salt of the sea, feel the stinging heat of the desert, touch the minerals and rocks, hike through the jungles, go on Safari, feel the splashing rain, smell the mineral iron smell of blood, ride a horse....I JUST DO NOT KNOW HOW TO EXPRESS HOW FABULOUS THESE NOVELS & SERIES ARE!

Smith’s ancient Egypt series is awesome
I love Wilbur Smith’s books and the Egyptian series is my favorite of his many wonderful books. I read the first few books in the series 20 some odd years ago. I’m glad I got a chance to enjoy them again on audible. Well worth the credits I’ll spend buying all of them that are available on audible.
Attention Audible why are you missing 3 of the 8 books in this series???? You have the first 4 and the 8th but missing 5,6, and 7. Please please get these books too.
I loved the book and recommend it to everyone. Especially if you enjoy a good adventure.

Lots of stereotypes
Perhaps this is a book that didn’t age well, and I don’t want to be on charitable to the author, but it does lean into a lot of stereotypes, such as Arabs, being motivated by religious fundamentalism, and “eastern women“ being raised, very submissive and self abasing. This ruins, the story for me.

So disappointing after River God!
Disjointed story with unrealistic characters. River God was excellent, where this book is so miserable I can’t listen anymore.
The person reading makes poor attempts at voices, which is distracting from the story.

A seriously mixed bag
First of all, Mark Meadows did a great job as narrator. Mr. Smith is a great writer, and once more has used descriptive language to a degree I did not think possible. I found it hilarious that he referenced himself and the first novel in the series as part of this novel's plot.
What I did not like: 1) Its description of the "Coptic", i.e., Orthodox, Church sounded like Protestant propaganda; 2) The violence was way over the top, it would have been better if it had been alluded to; 3) Too much kink, for no reason at all.
River God was amazing; the Seventh Scroll was ok; will give Warlock a try.
