Summary

Soviet Union, 1956: Stalin is dead. With his passing, a violent regime is beginning to fracture - leaving behind a society where the police are the criminals, and the criminals are innocent.

The catalyst comes when a secret manifesto composed by Stalin's successor, Khrushchev, is distributed to the entire nation. Its message: Stalin was a tyrant and a murderer. Its promise: The Soviet Union will transform. But there are forces at work that are unable to forgive or forget Stalin's tyranny so easily and demand revenge of the most appalling nature.

Meanwhile, former MGB officer Leo Demidov is facing his own turmoil. The two young girls he and his wife Raisa adopted have yet to forgive him for his involvement in the murder of their parents. They are not alone. Now that the truth is out, Leo, Raisa and their family are in grave danger from someone with a grudge against Leo. Someone transformed beyond recognition into the perfect model of vengeance.

good but not as good as child 44

I was hoping this would be as gripping as child 44 but wasn't quite up to it. still a good listen though.

Awful narrator, good story

I've been listening to audiobooks for years and this is the first time a narrator has absolutely destroyed a book. Adding a huge pause after every full stop or comma makes it so annoying that I seriously considered returning the audiobook and getting a kindle copy, if only I had a kindle :)

Good sequel, shame about the narration

Although no sequel was ever going to equal Child 44, I really enjoyed this story. It's just unfortunate that they didn't keep the same narrator who did Child 44, I really missed the Russian accents and sometimes the voices were so similar I couldn't work out which character was speaking. It was a bit slow as well and I could hear the narrator swallowing which was a bit off putting. I would recommend it for the story but the narration lets it down.

Gripping follow on from Child 44

Even more "unput-downable" than Child 44 this book romps along, taking our flawed hero to the brink of death. I never wanted it to end

Spoiled by narrator

Is there anything you would change about this book?

The narrator, Colin Mace sounds bored reading the book, it is very slow with quite large breaks and a lack of feeling for the main character that was developed so well in Child 66 by Stephen Pacey.

Who was your favorite character and why?

It is difficult to say as the narrator sucked all personality out of the characters

Would you be willing to try another one of Colin Mace’s performances?

No

If this book were a film would you go see it?

No

Any additional comments?

I though Child 66 was such a good book so I then bought the remainder of the series, I think that I may come to regret this.

Gripping stuff

Intricate storytelling with sympathetic characters and interesting historical detail. It would be great if the hero could hold down a job for more than one book though. I fear for his CV.

Thrilling!

I really enjoyed this book. Yes it's a bit far fetched at times, and yes the narrator does leave rather long....... pauses ....... between lines, but that didn't bother me or dilute my enjoyment of listening! So now I'm going to listen to the 3rd instalment of this excellent trilogy!

Very good

After Child 44 I was a little nervous to listen to the follow up as some reviews had said it wasn't as good, I'm glad I gave it a go as I enjoyed this as much as the first book.

A decent thriller

Child 44 was one of the most disturbing books I have ever read. Thankfully that is not the case here. It's a decent read but stretches belief to breaking point. Worth reading if only for a little insight into the transition from Stalin to Kruschev.

great book poor narrator

Because i loved Child 44 so much I bought this without listening to the reader. I found him too slow and his style of reading broke my attention away from the book. So make sure you are ok with the narration before you buy.
