Summary

At a funeral of an old friend, Matt Helm takes a trip down memory lane and sparks a romance that he thought was safely locked in the past. But with old feelings resurfacing, other things Helm thought were buried are coming back to haunt him - a small-time hood in Mexico, a dirty drug deal, and a string of women that lead him into dangerous territory.

Too Long

This is one of the longer books and it doesn't really need to be. Matt Helm is a character I don't think would be written nowadays and quite often it's difficult to understand why he was then. There are elements to all the books that are repetitive and elements that are annoying. Matt Helm becomes unlikeable for many reasons with his continuous explanations on life, love and relationships.

Retread

Unbalanced revenge-seeker (a villain we’ve seen before) with unlimited resources is foiled by Matt Helm, whose irresistibility to every woman (including the prototype revenge-seeker, back again for a third appearance) has begun to wear thin. Ex-girlfriends and former enemies abound.

Story was weak

I felt the story was significantly weaker than previous iterations of the Helm series. Glad it was free

Iron man Helm!

We enter upon a conversation between Helm and Mac. Mac’s daughter, Martha Devine has recently been widowed by a shotgun blast, violently cutting her late husband Bob, an agent like Helm, in two in her presence. Mac feared that his daughter, feeling guilty, may seek out the killer and take revenge upon herself. In a stressful and unprotected moment, Martha shared much of her personal life, along with Bob’s professional life, with someone she believed to be a close friend. The friend, Elenor Brand a writer, published everything Martha had confided in an Inquire-like rag. Shortly after, Bob Devine was killed. Mac asked Helm to look into the matter and stop his daughter from doing anything untoward. So much for the setup of the story. It didn’t take Helm long to discover what had happened concerning Bob Devine. On the other hand, there was still an issue with Elenor Brand. Mac’s organization wasn’t in the protection business but they didn’t want anything fatal to happen to Elenor right now. Considering they were mentioned in her article, they didn’t want the backlash that might result. Helm embarked on the new mission. Circumstances were very strange to Helm, he kept running across people and incidents from the past. He didn’t know what to make of it but he pushed forward, dealing with one situation after another. This novel is twice the length of others in the series, full of déjà vu moments, and the last volume in the Audible series. It’s been an exciting and interesting run.

19 down, 7 to go. greatesr series ever

ive listened to Ludlum, Larson, Flynn, Eisler and enjoyed them but I was never as hooked on the next book like I was with Hamilton and Matt Helm. His character development and tyinf stories together wqs 2nd to none. Stefan Rodnicki brought Helm to life. Flaws, instincts, never overdone on skills... self deprecating and funny. Start at book 1 and listen til 19. Can't wait for reat of books

Narrator needs a cough drop

The narrator sounds like he’s got a bad cold and sore throat. (Linguistically, that’s called creaky voice.). You’re not a 70 year old smoker.

I don’t know why authors think immediately jumping to characters wanting to bang is appealing. The main characters are at a funeral, but their internal monologue immediately goes to, ‘Sexy sex. We had sex. More sex, please .’ Gross. Being horny isn’t a personality trait or replacement for character building.

I couldn’t make it past the first few chapters.
