The Rejected Suitor wins my hand!

I thoroughly enjoyed The Rejected Suitor! The story was light and enjoyable with fun & interesting plot twists. I've only recently discovered these regency books and find them delightfully distracting. I appreciated the light hand taken in the romance details. While some books are guilty pleasures that you would not want to be overheard, I could listen to 'Suitor' and not cringe if my children caught some of the narration. And speaking to the narration, Ms Hewitt's performance was spot on. I literally felt like I was meeting different and distinct characters, even forgetting it was only one person voicing them at times! From the dottering old aunt to the overbearing brother to the minor characters, the care the author gave to their creation was realized in the narrator's skillful performance.

This book was exactly as promised. I wanted a fluffy fiction, not a historical documentary and that is what I got. Ms McCarthy wove a fun fantasy tapestry and Ms Hewitt spun the tale into vibrant life with her lyrical and lovely voice. Thank you ladies!

Traditional Regency Romance

Any additional comments?

I want to preface my comments with the fact that I am a true fan of historical romance. I probably read and/or listen to about 100 such books per year. What attracted me to The Rejected Suitor is that it is set in the Regency period (think the Jane Austen era).

The story revolves around Jared, the Earl of Stonebridge, and Emily Clearbrook who is a Duke's daughter. Three years earlier Jared promised to marry her, but he left her without a word. Emily's brothers are committed to see her married soon, but she is too independent having served as a spy during the war.

I found the premise unrealistic and the characters unbelievable. I didn't understand why Emily's father blackmailed Jared into marrying someone else three years earlier, or how his new pending engagement was relevant to the story. Also why were Emily's brothers so intent on getting her married off quickly to anyone rather than someone she loved? Furthermore, why was Emily's now widowed mother willing to see her daughter married to the man the mother still loved?

Teresa McCarthy's narration was OK. I enjoyed most of her voices for the characters, but her voice for Jared was too soft and feminine-like. He should have been manly, more like the brothers.

Love the strong heroine

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Parts unrealistic for the times depicted in this book. As another reviewer said, “some of the premises are unrealistic, this is fiction, and who knows intelligent men could have used women as spies and then claimed all the credit. It is done all the time.”

Read this book if you want a strong hero, very sigh worthy :), a beautiful strong heroine, and a nice mystery to tie the story all together nicely. A must read.

Very poor narrator

Story is quite good but the narrator lets the book down. Very breathy and excitable. It spoiled the book to be honest.

Awful narration, rated G book.

The narration was so bad the book suffered even more. The story it's self just was okay, the characters were just okay. There was a lot of dialogue (which I did like). Zero sex in this book so its rated G. There was kissing, that's it.
This story could have been much better.

Ruined by the narration. All the men sounded like old scratchy high pitch voiced idiots.

I don't think I will ever listen to this narrator again.

Love It!

What made the experience of listening to The Rejected Suitor the most enjoyable?

I was able to play this audible on my iPad and also was able to read along with my ebook. I was also able to do things around the house with the audible playing. It gave me time to listen to the book without running behind. I enjoy this series and being able to listen is a plus.

What about Pearl Hewitt’s performance did you like?

I did enjoy Pearl Hewitt's performance it kept me intrigue and she did good with narrating the story. There was no dull moment.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I enjoy it. There were some humor in it. I chuckle at Emily retorts and Jane outrage for Emily.

Any additional comments?

I would recommend this. If a person has the means to pay for an audible book. You don't need to have the book on hand to follow along. It great for listening before bed with the light off. No need to try squint in the dim light trying to read a book or reading a ebook in the dark. Especially if you are traveling and can't read in the car! I usually read a book and in a hour or two depending on the time. But listening to the audible book you hear the miss detail from reading the book to fast. It at a normal pace that allows you to pause and pick up from you stop. I would recommend this to people who can't read as well as they use too due to age, illness, or just because there no time to read anymore.

Average but Entertaining

What made the experience of listening to The Rejected Suitor the most enjoyable?

It took awhile but I did develop a liking for the characters.

What was one of the most memorable moments of The Rejected Suitor?

I like the scene where Emily took it upon herself to retrieve Jarod's daughter.

What didn’t you like about Pearl Hewitt’s performance?

Unfortunately, the narrator was not one of my favorites. She did not do a good job with the male voices and even the female voices did not have much range.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Even though the book had enough intrigue to inspire a desire to get to the end, there were so many things that made it hard to listen to, I had to put it down regularly and return to it at a later time.
