Summary

From the number one international best-selling author of Holy Island and Longstone.

The circus is in town....

When a 10-year-old girl turns up on DCI Ryan’s doorstep to tell him she’s witnessed a murder, he has no idea he’s about to step into his most spellbinding case yet. The circus has rolled into Newcastle upon Tyne, bringing with it a troupe of daring acrobats, magicians and jugglers - and one of them is a killer.

Ryan and his team must break through their closed ranks to uncover a secret which has lain buried for eight years, before the killer strikes again - this time, to silence the only living witness....

Murder and mystery are peppered with romance and humour in this fast-paced crime whodunit set amidst the spectacular Northumbrian landscape.

The Circus comes to town

This time Ryan, Phillips and McKenzie are trying to solve an eight year old murder in the circus community. Alongside this Lowerson, as acting SIO, and Yates are busy trying to solve a series of gangland killings. Towards the end of the book it becomes clear that the two cases might be linked. The book ends on a bit of a cliffhanger with one character in peril (good job I already have the next book in the series!)

It was great to meet Ryan’s team again. As always the banter between Ryan and Phillips was hilarious. But the standout character of this book was the wonderfully delightful Samantha. The relationship between her and Phillips and McKenzie was so lovely. She is a child who seems so much older than her ten years, but is also very vulnerable.

This wasn’t my favourite Ryan book. I feel that the plot was a little simplistic but it was still an entertaining story and I can’t wait to get started on the next in the series.

I listened to the Audible version and as always Jonathan Keeble delivers an impeccable, flawless performance.

The reader gave depth to the characters and brought them to lufe. Good story line which had a few twists and turns

Magic once again..

The Moor is another fantastic addition to the DCI Ryan series. This time, a young circus girl turns up on Ryan's doorstep, convinced she remembers information about a murder from when she was just a baby. As Ryan and his team begin to look into the claims, pieces start to fall into place, and the cast of the visiting circus are under the microscope.
Alongside this, a larger plot line seems to be taking shape involving young Jack Lowerson, and the return of a particularly nasty individual from earlier in the series. It will certainly be interesting to see how it unfolds.
Flawless narration once again from Jonathan Keeble.

The Moor.

Great performance as always by Jonathan Keeble. Although I'm a big fan of L J Ross this is definitely not her best and one I can't see myself either re-reading or listening to again. Disappointed.

Awful accent

As a Geordie, I found the accent grated on me. Not everyone born and brought up in Newcastle, speaks with a broad Geordie accent. Very few of my friends speak with this accent despite being Geordies. Maybe if they had a proper Geordie to read the book they would also be able to pronounce the local names. It particularly irritated me when Anna was given a broad Geordie accent she was brought up in Northumberland, not Newcastle, and was well educated so was most unlikely to have a strong accent. A shame because the story is good.

*Someone Scorned*

This case was very intriguing, it starts out with Samantha who is a 10 year old girl making her way to the Home of DCI Ryan. In her mind he is the best and only person to know how to handle her revelation. This case felt quite emotional, especially when she reveals her reasons and she is looking for justice. That particular night DI Denise McKenzie and Sgt Frank Phillips were in attendance at Ryan’s home and with a lot of persuasion they end up having Samantha stay the night with them.

Now what Samantha reveals has Ryan and his team looking for the murderer who resides as part of the travelling circus that Samantha is born into. This revelation potentially puts Samantha at risk.

Things take a turn that make Denise and Frank start to form a bond with the brave and strong willed girl.

Will they get to the truth, it is amazing that the seemingly guilty looking people don’t always end up as the bad ones. As this case is starting to wrap up, another one is just beginning, I just devour these books

An enjoyable listen, but not outstanding

And you're lead at the end to read the next one... but I'm not inclined to do so.
