Summary

Thomas Mallen of High Banks Hall had many sons, most of them bastards. But to all of them he passed on his mark - a distinctive flash of white hair running to the left temple, known as the Mallen Streak. It was said that those who bore the streak seldom reached old age and that nothing good ever came of a Mallen.

In 1851, Thomas Mallen found himself a ruined man, forced amid scandal and disgrace to sell the hall. With him went his two young wards and their indomitable governess. Then the Radlet brothers of Wilbur Farm arrived, one of whom bore the unmistakable Mallen Streak.

Who is Miss Brighouse?

I love Catherine Cookson and have read her books for years. The Mallen trilogy is one of my favourites. I love the women CC writes. On the whole, like herself they are never weak and nor are they mewling fluffballs and the type I cant stand. Even in a man's world as most of these books are set, they still hold their own and do our sex proud. This the first is about Thomas Mallen the Squire, his financial downfall and the impact this has on his two child nieces and their governess and maid. All the men in the Mallen family have a white streak of hair and it's not just the legitimate offspring who bear it. Besides the two Farrington girls also growing up are the boys from Wulfbur Farm. Matthew Radlett and his half brother Donald, a white streaked reminder of the forced and unwanted attentions from Thomas on their mother Jane when she was an unmarried young girl. This book focuses on these key people growing up and their lives intertwined because the Squire recognises and welcomes Donald and his attentions towards the nieces. This book has all. Love, hate, rape, betrayal, illegitimacy, birth and death. I absolutely adore it.

The reader is not the best. More than once he calls the governess Miss Brighouse! her name was Miss Brigmore. Accents are at best passable and not refined enough for the governess and young ladies and the Squire. The northeast accents are also scratchy. A true Geordie should have read this. There are no shortage. I hope this reader isn't reading the other two books of the trilogy. He doesnt do justice.

amazing and beautiful

my mum suggested I listen to this as she has always loved Catherine Cookson and I remember as a child the book shelves full of every book she's ever written. I therefore felt a burden of responsibility on my shoulders to like it.. that pressure soon subsided early on in the 1st chapter and I loved every minute.. I shall revert back to my mum for her next recommendation in the Mallen series!

CC at her best

Really enjoyed this audible book. I watched the series on TV over 40 years ago and would love to see it again

Not her best

One thing was the narrator found it hard to follow and a bit boring. After the 3rd time of trying to listen to it gave up!
