Summary
Mahan's ready for new adventures - just as the gaming world of Barliona thought it was about to reenter its old comfortable rut. The winds of the Dark Forest have finally died down; Altameda has recognized its new owner while Geranika is nursing new schemes of global destruction.
Would Mahan be happy with this predictable old life? We think not! New storylines, new monsters, new dungeons, and a new status: Our High Shaman hates the daily grind! He wants a new apprentice? Then he'd better find someone who has no right to summon Spirits. A new ship? It's going to be one of a kind! A new love? Well, we'll have to see, won't we?

It was a good series until the ending of this book
I loved the series up until the end of this book, absolutely killed the series for me. I won't bother with the next two books in the series personally.

entertaining book set ruined by a terrible ending
I must say i had thoroughly enjoyed the way of the shaman series up to this point. unfortunately for some unknown reason, Vasily Mahanenko decided to wright in a terrible cliff hanger ending. the final chapter in the book tears down all we have learned and loved in this world and is just badly written to boot.
If you enjoyed the first 4 books in this series and want more of the same, then I would tell you to leave it there and not bother with book 5 at all. if you want strange jarring twists and depressing ends that throw the rest of the series out, then read on.
I had already bought book 6 in this series but after reading this I am now done with the series and have exchanged it for something hopefully better. I may come back but I very much doubt it.
Jonathan Yen does another superb narration of this spoiled story and the first half of the book is more like the first 4 books.
I have not said this very often about a series but this entry has seriously made me regret spending my time reading any of the rest which I had enjoyed up to this point.
give this one a miss and find a better LitRPG to put your time into.

Dastardly Deeds Done
If you have made it through the previously four books then this one will not be a surprise to you and the writing and presenter continue to do a great job.
Some people may see the ending coming from a long way away others (myself) didn't see it until closer to the end.
Shaman Mahan continues his journey and adventures in the game and struggles to overcome the various challenges and basically happily progressing along as he works his way through his 7 year imprisonment sentence.
Nothing really major happens in this story until the end just continuation of various plot lines and character development but it is still quite enjoyable even with the few minor holes in the plot. The more sensitive of us will hate the ending and will have high expectations of the next book in the series.
Love the book, love the series, hate waiting for the next one.

The Best performed audio book I've heard.
I have over 300 audible titles and I have to say that the narration and performance of this book is one of the best I've heard. It's a compelling universe with a great story and awesome characters. I can't wait for a sequel.

Pissed Off!!! (5 stars)
It is not often that a book leaves you at such a cliff hanger that you are so angry you want to throw your phone and yell out loud at what just happened!!!!
This is an excellent series. The writing is great & what a roller coaster.
I am just super pissed at what happened, I call upon a herald, we need revenge!

I'm so angry!
Do you have any additional comments?
This book was more or less like the rest in the series except if felt rushed and was lacking in content with some of the other characters. The ending was far to much of a cliffhanger to leave off on and there is no real sign in the series if it will continue.
I must say however that the ending of this series makes me want to punch things, a lot, ALL THE THINGS!
So I suppose it was good in a negative emotional manner. I really want the series to continue and will continue reading if it does.

Glad this is not the end!!!
What made the experience of listening to The Karmadont Chess Set the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed all of the books so far, I didn't care for the ending of book five but I am happy to report that as of right now there are two more books in this series that I know of
What did you like best about this story?
I have never felt sick to my stomach because of the ending of a book before but wow, after I recovered from it and had a day or two in which I could calm down I have to say that the ending is the most powerful ending I have ever read.
Any additional comments?
Don't be discouraged, this book will kick you in the teeth at the end but fear not because it still has two more to go.

Would you listen to The Karmadont Chess Set again? Why?
probably but only if there is a book six
Who was your favorite character and why?
mayan because hes mayan
Have you listened to any of Jonathan Yen’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
no
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
what the fuckitty fuck man that was so ruthless and cold that i broke my shit
Any additional comments?
i cannot believe mayan was so obtuse but then again not all hope is lost so hopefully book six will be filled with the best kind of revenge

UN-FREAKING-BELIEVABLE
Is there anything you would change about this book?
Just about everything ESPECIALLY chapter 12. WHAT A WAY TO DUMP A LOAD OF CRAP ON YOU!
Has The Karmadont Chess Set turned you off from other books in this genre?
NO. Just turned me off THE WAY OF THE SHAMAN.
What does Jonathan Yen bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
Excellence.
Could you see The Karmadont Chess Set being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
NOT to be WATCHED BY ME.
Any additional comments?
This is the kind of thing only real jerks do. I know it's just fiction. I know it doesn't really matter. But after Books 1 - 5 (over 100 hours) of my life invested to have these 15 hours or so do this just seems MEAN, petty, spiteful and hateful. Especially in these dark times. This book is just so disappointing. Like all the others, it was great escapism, a fun run, through chapter 12 but then I got the meanest thing I've experienced in all my days of reading fantasy. And what really pisses me off is I'd read a spoiler about the ending. It still caught me completely off-guard. I'm sooo angry.

heartbreaking... enthralling...
As with the first 4 books this series is wonderful. Way of the Shaman, Awaken Online, and Daily Grind are three of the best litRPG books I've ever seen but Mahanenko has a way about him that makes the book seem to never end. it traps you in and whenever you reach a point that seems to conclude it just keeps rolling on. The ending way a truly shocking conclusion whether you saw it coming or not but it still gives you that despite edge of hope to cling to and a fire to see where this goes next. All I can do now is wait impatiently for the already anticipated book 6.

Retracting: worst ending ever
This has the worst ending to a book series I have ever seen. I saw it coming but I was hoping I was wrong.
Edit: Okay I have to retract the above statement. I wrote this because I was so furious at the ending of the book that I just couldn't write anything else. Then I had to wait. Furious. Vowing not to read anything by this author ever again. Hurt, Wounded, I suffered having the character I loved so brutalized that I felt like game of thrones might be a lighter departure. Then finally I read the novella because a friend of mine took pity on me and spoiled that not all was as it seemed. I have since finished the series and I have to give the caveat that it's worth it. Be thankful the other books are now out so you don't have to wait. Be sure you read the novella.I have the pleasure of declaring that of all the 100+ novels I read this year this series is the one that took the cake for the best emotional roller-coaster with a rewarding ending.
