Summary

Brought to you by Penguin.

A girl covered in blood. A missing man. A cryptic fairy tale.

Detective Laura Shaw seems to have it all: a supportive husband, a happy two-year-old and a great career. She is her team's top interviewer, brilliant at coaxing victims to open up.

Then, she meets Jenny - a 14-year-old assault victim - and the façade crumbles. Jenny's stepfather is missing, the blood on her clothes is not her own and Laura can't interpret the fairy tale she keeps repeating.

But Jenny isn't the only one with secrets. With every hour that passes, Laura loses more of her grip, grappling with the biggest question of all:

Is every life worth saving?

Enjoyable

Overall I enjoyed it, good story and characters. It was spoiled a bit by “dumb bitch” repeated over and over and the giggle was very irritating.

What outstanding narration!!!

All 3 narrators were really excellent; but I felt like the narrator who plays Jenny could have been doing a 'live' performance on a stage. Brilliant. Very fast pace (too fast for some I would imagine) but fitted in with the style of this complex and riveting story.

LOTS of shouting

the acting really prevented me from warming up to any of the characters and I ended up wishing it was finished already. the amount of times I jumped for the random shouting and aggressive reading of the lines!
do not use the sleep timer with this book. you will get a heart attack.

Jenny's Story

This was a sad listen. It really was the story of Jenny's abuse. Whilst listening I couldn't help but think this is probably happening to girls across the country - I guess that means it was totally believable. The side story of the unravelling of one of her interviewers also spoke about the damage done by sexual assault - dark, sad book but I loved it.

Riveting from beginning to end, this novel tells a story of the horrors of abuse and the significance of being heard…

Brilliantly written and performed, the detail so real you can smell and feel it. It will make your heart race and break, leaving you in no doubt as to the long term damaging effects upon a victim of child abuse and rape - as well as the importance of telling your truth that ensures such a perpetrator is removed from society so he can never hurt another soul again.
