Olaudah Equiano's autobiography challenged minds and hearts in the late 1700s. The first autobiography ever written by a former slave, The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano is one of the most well-recognized slave-narratives. It was first published in 1789 and gained notoriety as a mechanism for the abolitionist movement in England in 1807. In his work, Equiano illuminates the life of himself as a slave and then a freed man, ultimately becoming a respected politician and philosopher.

Essential Reading
Fascinating account of what life was like in the 1700's for an African slave.
My only complaint is the narrator should have been black. It spoilt the immersion and the reading was quite dry at points. It did not do this work justice.

Extraordinary, moving, accessible.
This is an incredibly gripping account of one extraordinary man’s life from childhood in west Africa, enslavement, freedom, coming to a personal faith in Jesus and abolitionist.
It reads like a cross between Hornblower and 12 years a slave, giving a personal account of the horrors of the transatlantic slave trade and slavery, the trials of being a freed man, the surprisingly globalised and interconnected trading of the 18th century and by implication Britain’s gain from slavery.
The prose is beautiful, the arguments passionate, clear and gracious. As a primary source it authoritatively reveals the micro and macro pictures.
I would consider this essential reading for all seeking to understand Britain’s role in the transatlantic slave trade and the realities of slavery in the West Indies.
It is well read with appropriate intonation and in-keeping with the authors underplaying of the extraordinary events.
The word incredible came to mind so often that I looked up some critiques of the book. I understand that his purchase as a slave and travels as a seaman are so well documented from contemporaneous ships records etc that there is no disagreement on its truthfulness. Some have questioned whether Equiano was born in Africa or in North America due to some conflicting records. Either way this does not detract from the account.

Amazing Autobiography
Amazing account of travels and adventures from 250 years ago. Despite human trafficking, piracy, and plunder, the narrator remains positive for a future of justice and humanity. Impressive book that should be read widely.

Amazing
My first Audible book and really enjoyed listening to this biography. Loved listening to how The Good Lord granted him salvation through repentance and Faith in His beloved son- Jesus Christ.

Tearless Sorrow
informative account of the knife wound that is still bleeding out in the soul of every African. Read out aloud in the tradition of stoicism devoid of the desperation pain and depression etched in the authors narrative

A decent book, but definitely not my cup of tea.
I personally didn't like this book. I didn't think it was particularly well-written (I both read and listened to this book), but it was performed pretty well. I read this book for a "Slave Narratives" course and I don't particularly feel it did that great of a job representing the true lives of how MOST slaves were treated and what they went through. I feel like this book is very general toward the greater population of slaves. I felt there could be better books to portray the lives of slaves more adequately and the true torment they went through- even he states in his book that he was lucky and one of the better-treated slaves.

Kinda tedious…
It’s a pretty good story and really one of the only firsthand accounts of someone who experienced slavery during the colonial era. Unfortunately, the writing is so stilted, mostly because of when it was written, that it is somewhat painful to listen to. The narrator doesn’t make it much better, although he really tries. I really feel like it should be made into a movie and it would do a lot better in that format in this time.
