You will inherit everything. The house. The money.

There's just one condition.

You have to catch a killer first....

When Sarah's Aunt Evelyn passes away, she discovers a hidden fortune has been left to her, including a foreboding mansion in a small Northumberland town.

But it comes with one condition.

For most of her life, Evelyn had been haunted by the loss of a friend who went missing in Cragsmoor—the very house Evelyn has left to Sarah.

Now, Evelyn's final wish is for Sarah to return to Cragsmoor and uncover the truth.

If she does, she will inherit everything.

But someone wishes for the secrets of Cragsmoor to remain hidden.

Someone who may have killed once before....

Gentle murder mystery with lots of twists n turns

I really enjoyed "The Inheritance" by Howard Linskey as it was a really skilfully written and well plotted. old school murder mystery - I would not exactly call it thrilling or demanding but it did have a really creepy atmosphere and plenty of bumps in the night.

I enjoyed the way we had to follow clues from a recently departed aunt's memoirs and the flashbacks of a fabulous friendship and introduction to a wealthy aristocratic family complete with manor house.

I was not that keen on the anti-aristocrat/wealthy family vibe which was fairly constant throughout and smacked of a giant chip on the shoulder. Examples such as the police being told not to push questioning posh people I found laughable - especially less than 40 years ago. Personally I have not had many dealings with the landed gentry, but I like to judge people individually, not write them all off based on background - so I found this a bit churlish and annoying.

Other than these sweeping generalisations, I really did enjoy the mystery of it and all the sleuthing and of course the general premise of being set the task of solving a disappearance from long ago.

I did not really care for the dead fox but apart from that it was all very mild mannered though with adult themes and of course you needed to suspend disbelief to enjoy the story as it was all rather unlikely though without any glaring plot holes.

There was something a bit Famous Five/Nancy Drew about it, although the heroine was all grown up and a young struggling writer. To sum up, it was a grand adventure, easy listening but kept me hooked until the end and I may even try another Howard Linskey title in the near future.
