Summary
How to unleash "human magic" and achieve improbable results.
Hubert Joly, former CEO of Best Buy and orchestrator of the retailer's spectacular turnaround, unveils his personal playbook for achieving extraordinary results.
Joly and his team rebuilt the company into one of the nation's favorite employers, vastly increased customer satisfaction, and dramatically grew Best Buy's stock price, while making Best Buy a leader in sustainability and innovation.
In The Heart of Business, Joly shares the philosophy behind the resurgence of Best Buy: pursue a noble purpose, put people at the center of the business, create an environment where every employee can blossom, and treat profit as an outcome, not the goal.
Putting this approach into practice requires radically rethinking how we view work, how we define companies, how we motivate, and how we lead. Joly shares memorable stories, lessons, and practical advice, all drawn from his own personal transformation from a hard-charging McKinsey consultant to a leader who believes in human magic.
The Heart of Business is a timely guide for leaders ready to abandon old paradigms and reinvent capitalism so that it contributes to a sustainable future. Visit TheHeartofBusiness.org to learn more.

Inspiring story on purposeful and human leadership
This is a personal and inspiring story on leadership that every aspiring or humble leader would want to listen to as an act of serving those impacted by their leadership. Leadership has never been about being less human, yet often it has been misunderstood and misused as such. This book is an account on why and what purposeful leadership acts, talks and feels like.

Text to speech?
The heart of business is a good book & almost a biography oh Hubert Joly’s business life. More content around the turnaround of best would have been great as it’s very top line & really only starts to explore some of the concepts that were used in the turnaround.
Fir me personally I found the book engaging but the voice reading was like a text to speech program, very dull and almost robotic. If you like books read by the author then this isn’t fir you. However if you want a book that explores a different way to look at businesses & leadership then this is worth a listen.

We do need leaders who can anchor strategy in a Noble Purpose.
I first hear Hubert Joly in a WBECS pre-summit session for coaches. I was so intrigued that I picked up is book in Kindle and Audible. I teach at a business school and I am an executive coach. I couldn’t agree more with his approach to business. Treat people right and profits will be your outcome. Profits are not the goal. Be good to your employees, your customers, your other stakeholders and the profits will follow. I love the challenge in the book’s conclusion asking what we will do to further this idea. I will help my students and my clients to see the value in this approach. And the world will be better off. Thank you Mr. Joly! Your book was a joy to read.

Very inspiring on how to run a purpose driven large company
I heard about Hubert’s book on an interview with Gary Vaynerchuk. My consulting company is a B corporation, but there are very few large companies doing this kind of purpose and sustainable work. I was inspired to learn about the turnaround at Best Buy and hope other CEOs and boards listen to this book. Focus on purpose and people and the profits will take care of themselves.

Superb Leadership Exemplified
I truly loved the foundational teachings Hubert Joly brings to light. These are basics that center on one of the biggest variables in business….human behavior. I recommend this work to anyone aspiring to make a difference in the business world. Thank you, Hubert, for conceptualizing “Human Magic”!

Not very insightful
The book essentially presents a false premise that a proper business could either focus on profit or the satisfaction of employees and to a lesser extent other stakeholders. It fails to explore the simple fact that the best way to pursue profit could very well be something that produces benefit for its stakeholders without the tired appeals to the modern critiques of capitalism bad. Of course this caring about more than profits is then virtue signaling its way having to care about all the typical woke causes like climate change, systemic racism, blah, blah, blah. This book offers no novel ideas and is wholly unconvincing of its premise.

Just Okay
This book was basically a history of one man's career. No doubt it was an extremely accomplished career. However as a small business owner, most of what he said didn't feel as if it applied to me.

Read Principle Centered Leadership instead
Well the stories, application, and social agenda are new, the principles or not. Covey does a much better job of articulating a non-politicized version of these timeless truths.
