Story
Even at 15, Jeanne, the privileged daughter of a royalist EmigrE, knew what she liked: Englishman Robert Blake, bastard son of a marquess. Yet his questionable birth rendered him forbidden. Forced to part, they were still young enough to believe in tomorrow. But as time passed, that brief ephemeral flirtation at Haddington Hall faded into memory.
Summary
USA Today bestselling author Julia London, "a gifted and versatile author" (Publishers Weekly), introduces a sexy, wildly romantic and emotionally charged new trilogy in which three aristocratic young ladies, upon discovering they are destitute, resort to desperate means to keep up appearances...and find the husbands of their dreams.
When the young ladies of the Fairchild family learn that their stepfather has absconded with their late mother's fortune, Ava, the eldest, hunts down the notoriously wealthy rakehell Jared Broderick, the Marquis of Middleton and heir to a dukedom.
Much to her shock and delight, the marquis sweeps her into a whirlwind romance and proposes marriage. But after their passionate wedding night, Ava discovers Jared has ulterior motives of his own. Not only does he expect her to deliver an heir while he continues to enjoy a rogue's life, but Ava also suspects she is a pawn in her husband's quest for revenge. Marriages of convenience work for some, but for Ava a loveless bond won't do. So she devises a bold plan to confront her husband's demons so that he might be free to choose to give her his heart for the right reason: because she is the only woman he will ever truly desire.

Strange Book
Three quarters of the way through this book, I suddenly wondered if Audible had switched books on me. It started out well enough. Ada, our Heroine is left penniless and alone and Jared, our Hero must make a suitable match before his father forces him to wed a woman he knows he'll be miserable with. He has a mistress that he adores and wants to spend the rest of his life with. Suddenly, after sharing a brief kiss with Ada, he's dumped the mistress for no reason that I could fathom and he breaks all the rules of society to hurriedly marry Ada.
There's absolutely no chemistry between our H&H. Frankly, there doesn't even appear to be any attraction.
I've read several of Ms London's books and I never remember any of them being this disjointed and uninteresting.
Don't waste your time on this one. If Anne Flosnik coulnd't save it for me, it couldn't be salvaged.

Captivating and delightful
My first reaction to this book was WOW. I loved how the story began followed up with the challenges presented after the marriage. The storyline was very creative and definitely kept my interest the entire book. Very refreshing indeed. Love the fact that Julia London does not waist the reader’s time writing about each character’s ridiculous mind babble and relationship and personal insecurities. It is so refreshing to read a story completely focused on developing characters so that every moment is filled with something that actually adds to the experience. I highly recommend it although this narrator, I feel, takes a bit away from the story because when she talks it’s as if she has something in her mouth.

I never want to listen to this book ever again
Any additional comments?
I NEVER WANT TO READ/LISTEN TO THIS BOOK AGAIN.
I’ve been on a Julia London STREAK lately. I’ve fallen in love with her stories & character development. I especially liked the heroines as they were practical and not foolish like most in the historical romance genre. Also, if there were misunderstandings, they were mostly solved fairly quickly and not overly tedious. My streak ended with this book. Sure Ava was great for most of the book but alas she changed and in a bad way. I think what ticked me off most was Ava went after Jared because she needed a marriage to avoid being “sold off to the highest bidder.” He needed a marriage to get an heir and appease his overbearing father. Neither were honest with each other but one thing is clear: LOVE was not part of the deal.
However, because she fell hard, she expected him to as well. She becomes a shrew because he does not love her and she ASSumes that he is still seeing the mistress (the mistress that she KNEW about before they were married). I forgot to mention that Jared wasn’t even cheating on the ignorant chit—although I can’t blame him if he did. She accused him and refused to believe him when he denied it. He was honest about being unsure with his feelings. I hated her by the end of the book and I wanted the ‘mistress’ or Jared to hurt her. Jared wasn’t perfect but he didn’t’ make ridiculous assumptions like Ava did. Ava acted her shoe size instead of her age. She spoke to him on the subject of Edmund only in anger, never when things were going great. She kept carrying on about how he wasn’t a proper husband but she was a piss-poor wife.
Ava was added to the irritating heroines and unlikable heroines list with 1 hour left on the audiobook. What a waste of an audible credit.
1st half of the book – 4
2nd half of the book – 1
Overall 2.5 stars (and that is generous—Ava really brought it down to a 1.5)

Terrible hero & heroine
this is so awful I don't know what to say. The h/h have no chemistry, personality or anything that makes you like them. I think they do deserve each other as they would just make 2 people miserable and not 4. I just could not find any romance, love or affection. I am at the 7 hour mark and just don't have a clue as to why they are together. I have never read a story where I am voting for divorce....and quick , as I can't take much more of the hero being such a thoughtless jerk!! I am just glad I got this as part of the romance Package, so there is no great expense returning it and trying something better ( which at this point could just be a phone book, which would be more romantic).
I don't know if it gets better at the end, as I just can't finish it...and will not be trying the other books in this series.
The narrator is not good, so even that detracts from the book. As other reviewers have written, AF really needs to learn how to pronounce "f". I have an f-word that could describe this book!

A desperate duke too!
Anne Flosik delivered her exactingly reliable and expected performance. She never changes and can be expected to deliver.
Julia London fans will very much like this story as it too delivers as always. London seasons, country estates, dowries, ranks and arranged marriages with relationship twists, emotional angst and maybe a little villiany or a little treachery and you have a historical romance. That is all as it should be... and tied in a bow of satisfactional enjoyment. Whats not to like?
CREDIT worthy, yes, especially if you're a Julia London fan.
HEAT factor, 4, driven with steamy and mostly explicit moments and enough sexual tension to keep it interesting.

Cannot recommend
I gave it two stars because I was able to listen to the end, but oy! It feels like a first draft that's crying for editing. The characters aren't sympathetic. The Marquis is cold hearted. I think he's supposed to be suffering from emotional wounds, but those are never made clear and frankly, its hard to care. He has a terrible relationship with his father, the Duke, who every single description shows him to be heartless and awful. Then there's a random paragraph about how much the Duke loves his son. What? Nothing in his behaviors reflects his love of his son. And Jared does nothing but flaunt his father's dictates, until suddenly we get to a point where he needs to explain the history behind a child living at his country home, but remains silent because he needs to talk to his father first. Again, what?? The most memorable moment was after the couple spoke at the front door when Jared is about to go riding, Ava enters the house and in yet another emotional quagmire "stares off into space for what seemed like hours". Then she looks out the window to watch her husband riding off on his horse. So that took how long to accomplish? 3 minutes?? Let it be known that the new definition of "seemed like hours" is 3 minutes.
I've read more of these Regency period marriages of convenience than I'd like to admit to, and they usually follow a pleasant if predictable formula. Compelling reasons send the couple into a marriage of convenience, they start getting to know, enjoy and respect each other, something happens to mess things up, they realize how much they love each other and HEA. This was a jerky lurch from not caring to sudden seduction to deep emotional distress over unrequited love. At no point did either character display a single reason for the other to fall in love. I couldn't like either of them, and couldn't care less that they figured out how to be a couple.
