A journey into the deepest, darkest jungles of the Venezuelan Amazon...and a primeval place and time that mankind was never meant to exist in. Ben Cartwright, former soldier, home to mourn the loss of his father, stumbles upon cryptic letters from the past between author Arthur Conan Doyle and his great-great-grandfather who vanished while exploring the Amazon jungle in 1908. Amazingly, these letters lead Ben to believe that his ancestor’s expedition was the basis for Doyle’s fantastical tale of a lost world inhabited by long-extinct creatures.

Story
100,000 years ago the object hit the lake at the deepest point, quickly sinking into its mile-deep Stygian darkness. The sheets of ice closed, time moved on and the land forgot. But over the centuries, legends grew of people vanishing, of strange, deformed animals and of an unexplained luminescence down in the lake depths. When Marcus Stenson won the lucrative contract to create a sturgeon fish farm on the site of disused paper mill on the shore of Lake Baikal, he thought he had won the lottery and refused to listen to the chilling folktales....

Jurassic park with dragons....
I usually really enjoy this author but this book was not for me. Written well but it just felt a bit too much like Jurassic Park for me. I didn't really like the main female character either. Really good author but the subject was just not for me this time.

Just my opinion
I'm a fan of fast paced action and I've listened to a few of his books. Whilst the story is imaginative and filled with exciting chapters I was becoming agitated by his very simple use of description. A view of the area of the zoo was described as just "magnificent" or one of the creatures was simply "enormous" with not much else to fill my imagination with.

Don't compare it to Jurassic Park
I really enjoyed the beginning but felt the action came a bit too early and lost interest. I decided to give it another chance and was very happy I did.
