Summary

Two years ago, he had been a promising young novelist. Now he barely survives in a near derelict cottage with only his own obsessive thoughts for company. Two years of loving Drusilla - the rich, unstable girl with everything she needed, and a husband she wanted dead. The affair was over. But the long slide into violence had just begun....

Romped through this

Wonderful narration and although I guessed most of the conclusion, this was a sparkling read. Our hero is somewhat dim and our 'heroine' is obviously far more clever and devious than he can comprehend but although it was obvious all was not as it seemed, I really did enjoy the ride. Somehow doubt that younger listeners will understand the simpler world of the 60s/ 70s but those of us who do remember when a pound could buy you 10 cigarettes and a pint, then this is a treat.

Really Good Listen

The usual great stuff from this author. Beautifully written and with a wonderful twist at the very end.

She knows people and her characters are full of insight as to their feelings and subsequent actions.
Great narration and a wonderful listen.

Nicely written

This is nicely written, but the story us quite predictable if you are a fan if thus genre, once we meet the live interest!
As with so many of RRs characters. they are all largely unlikeable. But it's the questionable behaviour of humans that makes these kind of stories entertaining. The era of no internet/mobiles adds to the plot too.

Hugely satisfying ramped up tension

I loved the narration it was exactly right for the story. The whole tale is about Gray who is apparently chaotic, enthralled by Drusilla his controlling, married lover. She is a piece of work! Living in the White Cottage aka the Hovel in lonely penury after their break up he is obsessed and anxious but with a kind heart if weak and damaged. Events concur to get him into one mess after another, worse and worse situations. Not a word is wasted, clues are scattered like breadcrumbs in the forest, everything matters. I loved listening to this complex, completely circular nightmare of a drama. Vintage, classic Ruth Rendell developing into Barbara Vine…

Terrible Audio

Rasping Sibilant SSSes.
Impossible to concentrate on the content. It's beyond tolerance.
Apparently three more words needed. Here's an extra nine!
